My goodness I have seen so many different suggestions on here my head is spinning lol. My lil gir Cali died on the 10th of GI Stasis. I thought I was doing everything right, brought her to the vet gave her the antibiotics pellets veggies etc the vet recommended. I even tried suggestions on here, baby gas drops for her gas, canned pumpkin, critical care etc. Why are the views and suggestions so different? My vet says no to pinapple juice and apple juice to water because of natural sugars, she says the baby gas drops do not work, not to get her spayed (our other bun) so when Sally our mini lop started with the gas right after we gave her pellets we stopped pellets, gave her baby gas drops, tried cilentro, pumpkin etc and it got worse! We got home 5 a.m. this morning from the vet again with gas/bloat not pooping etc. I am at a loss! This is a rabbit savvy vet who has owned buns for 16 years telling me she can survive on the hay alone and to eliminate pellets completely add critical care til she poops more and just water not adding anything to it. She said papaya tablets are fine. Blah I am confused about all this advice. Can she really survive on hay alone? She said not to give orchard grass right now either since her belly is so sensitive. Sally loves her timothy grass but I am worried :? Also the whole introduction of veggies, we introduced cilentro and you guessed it she was gassy, when is the "real" time you should introduce veggies? She is almost 11 weeks. Is canned pumpkin really safe? The vet said apple juice has something in it that could kill a bun..dont remember what it was though? Pinapple juice has too much natural sugar? Not to mention the whole calcium thing. What does she need now at this age? How can I supplement her vitamins if she gets an upset belly everytime? :?

I'm sorry to hear about Cali. And I have no idea when to introduce veges and fruit as our bun was 2 when we got him. BUT I would do what the vet says. She is rabbit savvy vet she will give you the best advice.

Sorry for your loss

Sally is young yet I would start at small amounts of food...but that is me.

Sweetpea is now 11 mths and I got her when she was 4 mths and too thin from the pet store,

I feed:
~one hanging treat per week
~pellets with a mixture of Extreme fruit and nuts (which has dried papaya, pineapple, raisins etc)
~timothy blocks

Lettuce
dill
basil
strawberries or banana (treat)

and mostly hay.

here is a website that show which foods give gas more then others...hope it helps

Thank You :) I guess I am feeling overwhelmed and really tired as I am up every 2 hours checking on her :( I just want her to be "normal" whatever that is..sigh

Thank You for the link! :D

I must say that your vet is very misinformed. If you can't find another vet just ignore him or her as much as possible. Just because he or she has rabbits doesn't seem to have given much insight. Just to give one example: sure you don't give raw pineapple to a rabbit every day, but it dissolves hair & is lifesaving. Perhaps anorexia is the preferred state?

I suggest you get copies of Rabbit Health in the 21st Century & Rabbit Nutrition and Natural Healing. The authors are recognized as experts.

She was actually talking about the canned pinapple juice I was giving her sorry should have stated that. She said being a young rabbit the natural sugars could do more harm than good and I should stick to the papaya tablets plus (which have the pinapple enzyme in it)

Fresh pineapple juice would be better, since the canned stuff adds sugars and whatnot to it. My vet who is pretty good, says she doesn't like to recommend pineapple juice because it is pretty sugary. With my guy he doesn't handle sugar very well, so I have to be careful how much I feed him.

She also said the baby gas was ok but I could use the regular gel tablets for gas since the baby gas you have to dose so often. I'm not entirely sure what I think on that one.

if you are nervous about the pineapple then you can give papaya with the same effect. It is given to help with any fur blockage and both are recommended. We give the tablets that you can buy at the store.

Dont give so many different foods for your rabbit at one time right now. Her stomach seems like its being overloaded. If you give so many things at one time its hard to narrow down what gives her problems. Try keeping her on a small amount of pellets and give mostly hay. There are probiotics you can try usually at local feed stores such as benebac or probios to help put good bacteria in the gut. If she is on critical care then continue that instead of pellets but continue offering hay. Maybe the brand of pellets you gave just didnt agree with her? But dont try to offer anymore pellets until she gets better. Introducing more things will just make her worse.

Ok so no pellets or any kind of veggies right now? Just hay and water? She will drink ALOT of water when I add a tiny bit of the canned pinapple juice versus hardly any at all when its not added and from what my vet says she needs plenty of water to keep things moving in her gut. Oh and the critical care every 4-6 hours. She seems to be doing a bit better but I am still concerned. Do you know how long the reglan takes fot the full effect? She was given one injection at the vets and the vet said a few hours for pooping. She is pooping its just not her usual sized poop but at this point I an super happy she is pooping and eating and playing!

From jefferspet.com an animal supply company http://www.jefferspet.com/bene-bac-plus/p/4157/
Post weaning/older (gel): Administer 1 g per 10 lbs of body weight up to 40 lbs and 5 g for 50 lbs of body weight or over 2 treatments, 3 days apart, are recommended.

Id say definitely no veggies until her GI tract is back to normal. Reading from this I would suggest trying papaya tablets. Yes pineapple juice will make her drink more water because it can make you dehydrated and cause you to urinate and in turn drink more also.

Keep her on the critical care, hay, and give plenty of water. Good Luck.

about the reglan. We use it in the clinic and a shot works quicker than oral meds so about 2 hours sounds right. It obviously did something since she is having BMs

I feel bad having giving her so much to get her to drink more only counteracting it all! Thanks again!:)
