So I need some help and support....I took my two female rabbits to get spayed on Saturday April 21st. Sully is doing really well but Drake Died in the middle of the night last night.

Drake Was showing improvement on Monday and Tuesday morning but on Tuesday afternoon she stopped eating. I tried everything then took her to the vet on wednesday. (btw She was spayed at a low cost program that does not do follow up appts so we saw a different vet for follow up.) Vet said she looked and felt fine. She gave us some more pain meds, some formula and an oral syringe to feed her. Unfortunalty she died in the middle of the night last night.

Anyone here lose a rabbit to a spay or neuter? Should I try to contact the vet who performed the surgery and let her know? Ask if there were any complications?

I feel so bad bc I thought I was doing the best thing I could for them bc the clinic I took them to has so much experience.

My heartfelt condolences with the loss of Drake. Please don't feel bad. You were doing the right thing. I would definitely contact the vet who did the initial spaying at the clinic. It will give you some peace of mind to find out if there were complications during the procedure.

Some bunnies don't take well to the anesthesia like some people. Can actually give them fever. Dr. Joe informed us of that right away because they have such small, sensitive system. Every time they are putting a bunny under, it's assessed by weight.

Wishing Sully a quick recovery. Again so sorry for Drake. Some times you do the right thing and it goes wrong. Nobody knows why.

K:(

So sorry for your loss. I would personally contact the vet to let them know what happened because if there were complications maybe they can learn from it.

I thought my rabbit wasn't going to pull through. It is a pretty stressfull event for the little ones (and the giants too).

It sounds to me like you did everything you could do. So sorry for the loss.

I am so sorry for your loss~that's realy difficult. :rip::rainbow: Binky free sweetie.

Thank you everyone for your replies...The vet I took her to said they would do a necropsy free of charge if it would give me some peace of mind. Should I do it?

I would have the necropsy as that gives you the best possibility of answers. Although it can't bring her back I do find it helpful to know what happened rather than thinking of all the what-ifs.

I'm so sorry this happened. All we can do when we make decisions is to go with the odds, which say that a doe lives longer if she's spayed. She knew you loved her & wanted the best for her. Take good care of Sully.

Thank you so much everyone for your support, I really needed it. Well they are going to a necropsy for me (the second vet, not the vet that did the spay.) I will keep you updated. Oh and I also sent an email to the vet that did the spay and am waiting a reply.:cry4:

Just a quick update, the vet did a necropsy and the surgeon didn't seem to make any mistakes. She thinks Drake may have been born with a kidney condition and just couldn't handle the surgery. Did your rabbits have bloodworm before surgery? In my area they don't do it unless it is an older rabbit.
Any way I feel better knowing that the surgeon didn't mess up and I think I did everything I could to help her. Thank you everyone for your kind words. : )

Im so sorry about Drake. I actually had a baby tan that was sold to one of my friends. I'm not sure what went wrong but she actually died on the table. Some rabbits just can't take the anesthesia and have other underlying problems. It wasn't your fault

Oh, gosh, I'm terribly sorry! This is my biggest fear about spaying/neutering. Back in January we had our 3 unfixed rabbits all spayed (2 of them) and neutered (1 of them) on the same day so I could get the worrying over with all at once. So sorry about your sweet girl :(

So very sorry for your loss. In January I lost my Trillian on the table during her spay surgery. Don't second guess yourself, you were trying to do the right thing for her health. Binky free little one:pray:

I am so sorry for your loss. You did what you thought was best for her and her health. Don't second guess yourself, she knew you loved her and wanted life to be good for her. Binky free little one.

I didn't do bloodwork on my 5 month old male, but I did on my 4 year old female. Normally it isn't really needed for the young ones. You did the right thing and now you know the vet did the right thing too. Unfortunately these things happen sometimes. So very sorry.
