Zeus had 3 (or so) mint chocolate cookies....danger?

Zeus is a 6 year old New Zealand mix rabbit that weighs about 8 pounds.

Family Dollar has these awesome mint chocolate cookies that taste just like the ones that the girl scouts sell - only for much cheaper.

Zeus watched me have a couple last night (I have to eat something before taking some meds at bedtime) and even stole a cookie...which he's done before.

But while I was sleeping - he knocked the cookie tin off the bed (its one of the ones you get the butter cookies in) - and opened it and ate the rest of what I had in there - probably 3 or 4 cookies - maybe less as I'm not 100% sure.

Right now he's alert but hiding in the closet (he's afraid to come out cause he knows he's in MAJOR trouble with me....).

Nearest vet is 70 miles away - this happened sometime in the last 4 hours....

Anything I should watch for? I remember we've had rabbits on here before that have eaten chocolate chips, etc. and been ok....so I'm not overly worried - especially since I tend to spoil Zeus and share things like these cookies (but not THIS much) and other stuff with him.

Hey Peg - Bella ate an oreo a couple weeks ago and was fine but one thing the vet recommended if I was concerned is to do a subq to dilute the amount of chocolate in the system. Wasn't enough that they felt they needed any active charcoal.

Charlie ate a handful of chocolate chips and for him, we did active charcoal and subq. He had really heavy breathing and lethargy as it worked it's way through his system.

Can't say how much chocolate is on those cookies but the panting and stomach upset was what it showed up as with Charlie.

How long did it take for the lethargy to show up?

If the chocolate was going to be a problem, you would have seen him acting ill within an hour of eating the chocolate, and even see their skin almost "crawl". However, from the sounds of it, their not the kind of cookies with enough chocolate to really do anything other then taste yummy, like the Oreos HoneyPot's Bella ate.

Best thing you can do now is extra fluids to help flush any toxins out of the kidneys. And maybe do a blood pannel next time hes at the vets just to see if there was any damage from the chocolate, no rush on that however.

Other than avoiding me like the plague right now (cause he knows he's in big trouble with me) - Zeus appears to be fine.

He will be laying out in the bedroom and if I walk in - he runs to the back of the closet and lays there until I leave the room.

Chocolate won't be a problem here, but the sugar might be. Watch for runny cecals and restrict him to hay and water. Gas meds, probiotics and massage if he's uncomfortable.

They do seem to have amazing constitutions most of the time. Can't believe all the stuff Mikey has eaten with no ill effects. :shock:

Hey Peg - was just checking in to see how Zeus was doing. Glad the cookies passed through without problems!

I've never had to hide cookies before, but my new lady Bella is a beast for snacks... she tore open the box of oreos that I left on the coffee table.

Silly rabbits!! Zeus probably enjoyed every bite.

Wow that is a lot of cookies for one bunny! Glad it went through ok. I too would have been more worried about the sugar than the chocolate, but it's good to stay on top of things.

He's doing just fine....I have to be careful when snacking in the bedroom - because he LOVES chocolate. He's been known to try and pull a Klondike bar out of my hand (you know...the "What would you do for a klondike bar??" kind)...

The other day I gave him about 3 craisins - first time in months ...he went crazy.

Anyway - thanks for caring enough to check up on him.

OMG Tony would do that too if we let him near a Klondike. He developed a "thing" for chocolate once when he got a taste a few years back, but that seems to have gone away. He will steal cheezits from your hand and sit between the box and your mouth to intercept them though, so I definitely understand!
