I'm trying to think of a hay rack design that i could attach to one of the sides of the hutch so that it sits over their litter trays. Or maybe even one that sits inside of the litter tray on 1 end so they can do their business on the other. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Something i could make or buy (that's available in Australia).

Thanks

In my opinion, the best hay racks arekitchen storage baskets or racks. I found one that was designed to hold tin foil and plastic wrap. I attached it to the side of Gus's cage with zip ties right above his litter box.

I'm not sure where you'd find wire racks in Australia, but they can be found here in Canadaat most hardware stores (and some department stores) in the storage and shelving aisles.

Hope that helps!

Rue

Oh great, thanks Rue. I'll have to check out my local hardware store and see what they have. I was thinking of just tying a bunch of hay together with rope and then tying that to the hutch door and let them rip into it. Kind of like when you tie up a boned chicken that you might have stuffed so that it all holds together. Not sure whether that would work though. Don't want to make it difficult for my bunnies to get at the hay.

I saw some bird feeders at a few of my local pet stores but they were quite small. And i haven't been able to find any NIC's or even anything similar. =( I haven't checked my local bunnings store for NIC's specifically so i might have a look for them this weekend. Thanks =)

Oh awesome! I don't know why i never though to ask at the counter if they stocked them whenever i visit, which is at least every couple of months. >.<

Keep in mind the NIC is a brand name and that brand might not be available everywhere. Instead of asking for the brand or even NIC grids, ask for storage cubes or shelving cubes. That is what I usually put in the search bar when looking at store websites. If you are in the store, they are usually in the aisle that has other shelving, especially wire stuff, or with the storage bins.

Thanks Jill. I know i can definitely find those, will have a look around. The only thing im worried about is whether it's going to be hard for the bunnies to get the hay out of it? Mine are picky and don't eat all their hay, they pick out the stuff they like and leave the rest. >.< If it forces them not to be picky though then that's probably a good thing.

Kate, well that explains the difficulty in finding them! I've seen a few Aussies with "NIC" style set ups so hopefully i can find something similar.

In my out-door rabbit hutches I built the cages so I could open them from the top. Then I placed an oven rack (from the dump) at an angle against the side of the cage. This way I could just open the lid and slide in a whole flake of hay. My rabbits love to play/sleep in it and the hay usually last about a week (I just used bales from a local farmer).

Thanks a bunch for the heads up on that litter tray/hay rack tutorial, Autumn! That's going to be my first project once i move into my new place. Can't wait! ^.^
