I suspect pine/urine fumes are causing stuffy noses.

I've had Pancake and Riley for a year and a half now. I've liked the kiln dried pine pellet litter, but for the past few months, Riley's had a stuffy nose. It doesn't get worse or better really. The discharge is grey, but is infrequent. I make sure to change the litter before it becomes saturated. The smell annoys me too when I'm near their litter box.

I'm thinking of switching to a standard clay litter. I know it's bad if they eat it, but their litter is under a screen and a layer of hay. I originally set it up that way so that Pancake wouldn't kick the litter all over.

Any thoughts?

I've been doing kiln dried pine for 3 years, and haven't had a problem. I'm guessing that something in their environment has changed... just have to narrow it down now :)

Other causes could be the hay fines, dust in the room, and airborne fuzz.
Is there a ventilator or air conditioner in the room? Has the filter been cleaned recently?

If the hay bag is open, I would try storing it in a rubbermaid.
You may have to brush them more often to get rid of the hair and the associated particles.

How are Riley's teeth?

Those are all very good questions! Actually, I have a bag to put over the hay, so I'll do that tonight.

The vet says Riley is supposed to have his "Senior Rabbit" exam, which I'll do in the next month or two. If it's a pasteurella infection or whatever, I'm sure they'll catch it.
