Woo hoo! When I was outside with the bunnies today I spotted an Irish Hare running in a field across the road. I had my camera with me so I pulled it out and got a picture of him. Even though he was pretty far away. I decided to follow him and when I got to the end of my drive way I noticed him a little up the road. As I snuck closer he went into the field, my little brother was with me and we were watching him hop around the field (although they don't really hop, they spring). My dog came running down the road to us so I turned around and told my brother grab the dog in case he chased it and when I turned back the hare was on the road RIGHT in front of me, about 2-3 foot away. I froze, grabbed the camera and shot some pictures of him. When I went to stand up a bit he sprang off. Still though, it was so cool! Got some nice pictures :big wink: He was about the size of a medium dog. He was bigger then my JRT mix!

Coming towards us, he kept kind of hopping to us, and then going back

That's really neat!

I saw an Irish Hare down at Loop Head in County Clare when I was there last year. We were almost to the light house and the road ran through a small cut, with the bank at about window level. I looked over, and there was an Irish Hare running next to us.

They're beautiful animals, and I'm sorry I was driving and didn't have my camera handy. Ater we parked I walked back to that spot, but he was long gone by then. Rats.

Great pics! I get super excited whenever I see wild bunnies too. It's especially awesome when they do binkies. I hardly ever see wild ones around here, but both times I have its been on my way to or from the rabbit rescue. They do hang around there, we think it's because the litter boxes are dumped and composted on the property.

Very cool. :)

Thanks everyone :)
I saw two more earlier, we think they might have babies around here the farmer who owns the land says he has seen a few of them where I saw the one I took the pics of :) I'm just hoping people won't come and catch them for grey hounds :expressionless

You all should see how fast these guys are compared to rabbits! So much faster!

I nearly walked right on top of a cottontail today on my evening walk. I wasn't really watching for one but one suddenly sprang up at my feet and ran across the road and sat on the other side until we passed. Its the same spot I keep seeing them so they must live around there. Of course it could just always be the same one....I don't know.

That's amazing!
We only ever see cottontails around near the barn, I wish we had hares. I love their long legs. So cute!

It's disgusting to think humans will catch them for greyhound sport.  How inhumane and thrill-kill seeking.

Awesome photography and notes.  Thanks for posting!

I know if I ever see them idiots around here again I won't ne long sending them backing :expressionless

Thanks guys :)

Wow! Beautiful pictures!

So interesting to see the differences in their anatomy. A little shocking when you're so use to our fuzzy domesticated little guys!
