I had my first litter of french lop babies and they are almost 6 weeks old and out of 7 kits 3 are more fuzzy. Dad had quite a bit of baby fuzz when I got him but shed out to a nice normal coat. But I have one baby that is turning quite fuzzy! I had a girl come last week and pick her for a 4-h/fair rabbit but now I am nervous this baby might be too fuzzy and wonder if it will get a normal coat as it matures? Since this is my first litter I just don't know. The fur is about 1 1/2" long right now and seems crimped when I blow into it.

anyone have any advice? She wanted a doe and I have one other doe I can trade out for her. She looked at both and liked this one better but even in a week she seems more fuzzy. Do you think the fuzzy will go away?

I have not bred frenchies but I have a friend who has bred them for the whole time I have known her. She could usually tell the was fuzzy by 4-5 weeks, and I could see it in pictures, and the fuzzy ones she always sold. DQ I believe. Something genetic that is in many, maybe all, frenchie lines.

I personally am unsure if they lose it. I know fur in baby rabbits are usually terrible but I am unsure about the fuzzy gene in the frenchies.

Yeah just in the last couple days she has turned into quite the fuzzpuff. I called the girl and told her what I thought and offered her the normal coat doe for show and if she wanted the fuzzy one still she could just have her and see what happens. I told her that if she stayed fuzzy she wouldn't be showable and shouldn't be bred. She wants them both so I feel happy she should have one that is showable and won't be DQ for coat.

A lot of lines of French Lops do carry the wool gene (both parents must carry the gene for the offspring to have wool). Carriers often have a slight longer coat. I've sheared wooly French Lops - their soft coats mat easily and can be a nightmare to maintains.
