I came home last night around 11 pm and opened my front door. I was instantly hit with smoke and realized my whole townhouse was full of it. The downstairs wasn't too bad, and I thought maybe my boyfriend or our roommate left the stove on. So I opened the windows in the first level and checked all the appliances, and they were all off. I have two rabbits downstairs - Labrador and Precious along with my two guinea pigs and rat. They were fine as it was a light smoke.

Then I went to the hallway with the staircase that leads to the second floor and it was thick, pearl white smoke and I realized there was a fire up there. I FREAKED out because I have six rabbits up there - Spank, Sylvia, Simba, Savannah, Rush, and Smudge. The smoke was so thick I couldn't see my own hand in front of my face. It burned my eyes and I couldn't breathe. I have asthma so holding my breathe is a impossible game. But I wasn't going to give them up without a fight. So I ran up to my room and I instantly found Spank. I grabbed him, ran downstairs and stuffed him in a duffle bag. Then I took another deep breathe and ran back up - I found Sylvia but she ran away and I spotted Smudge, so I grabbed him and got to my door. I couldn't open it and Smudge scratched my chest and got away. I turned around and started searching and this time I found Savannah and Rush so I grabbed him, opened my door with my foot and raced down the stairs and stuffed them into a kennel. I ran back up (my eyes were burning and the back of my throat was closing). I found Sylvia and Smudge cowering by a wall, and I grabbed Sylvia, ran downstairs and stuffed her into another duffle bag. I ran back up, grabbed Smudge and ran downstairs and stuffed him into another kennel. By the time I got back up for Simba, the smoke was even thicker and I couldn't see a thing. I was on my hands and knees crying out for Simba, and I couldn't find him. I started grabbed whatever I could feel, throwing out and frantically feeling around for him. Then I just started digging somewhere... something told me that Simba had burried himself in my laundry basket and I just kept digging and throwing my clothes. And then I felt his fuzzy butt, so I grabbed him hard and clung him to myself and ran downstairs and stuffed him with Sylvia.

I went back up to make sure I didn't forgot anyone, nor imagined I grabbed one of them. I opened my roommates room just because and this inferno of heat blasted me in the face and there was a fire in there. I luckily came home just before it spead to my room where most of my bunnies where. I came back up coughing and hacking up this black stuff and I dialed 911. Meanwhile I packed up Labrador, Precious, my Guinea pigs and my rat and carried them all outside. My neighbours came out to help me carry them and I was hysterically crying by this time. I called my roommate and my boyfriend and I was throwing every cuss word at my roommate because I almost lost my bunnies.

I had to go to the hospital, but the entire time I was begging the paramedics and the nurses to let me call around and find a place to my pets for the night. They couldn't believed I made countless trips and nearly had carbon monoxide poisoning because I refused to leave any of my pets behind.

I came back to my place about two hours ago and my roommates room is destoryed.. all of his stuff was outside. Everything burned and melted. The hallway walls are black, my white carpet is black..

All of pets are completely fine.. except Spank is still scared :censored2:.. literally. He hasn't pooped since, but he's soaked in his urine.. and he won't leave the duffel bag. They are still at my friends place.. and I'm here cleaning my charcoaled and destoryed townhouse.

But they're all safe and that's what I risked my life for!

Oh my god!
Wow! You were so brave to do that, thank god they are all ok! Are YOU ok? Any lasting damage? Hopefully Spank will come around soon.

I don't really know what to say, this could have turned out so bad..

Wow you are SO lucky! I am glad everyone is ok and that you got home in time! I hope Spank starts feeling better soon.

That is like my worst nightmare, having my rabbit hutch somehow be so I can't get my rabbits, whether its a fire or a tree falling on them.
I've actually had dreams where my rabbit shed was on fire. It was scary so I know how you felt when it was real!

Wow! You are so brave to have done that -but I know so many people here might have done the same thing?
Did you find a place for you and your buns to stay?

Oh man. How bad is the damage to the townhouse? Was most of the fire contained in the roommate's room or...?

Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help you out - really.

Yup the fire was all in his room (he left a lamp on his bed, which fell over and caused the mattress to light up!). But I got home JUST before it spread, so I was really lucky.

My roommate's room is bad. Hardwood floors (now black) were torn up, his walls are completely black. Broken window. My room has black walls that I can easily get off with bleach. The carpet is ruined, and the hallway walls we are currently cleaning off with bleach which is working. I was just in the bathroom and all the shampoo bottles melted onto the tub. That might be hard to clean off!

I don't know what I would've done if I lost any of them. The worst night ever!

I can pick up Labrador, Precious, Sylvia, Simba, my guinea pigs, and my rat today definitely as their area is pretty good.

Spank is too scared to travel anywhere, but I need a pair of eyes on him. And Savannah, Rush, and Smudge will have to stay at the friend's house for another night. Maybe I can bring Spank home instead of my guinea pigs and he can live in their cage for the night.

Oh my gosh. I just read this whole post out to Steve and I was in tears the whole time- Steve nearly was as well.

I'm SO glad that the bunnies, and you are safe. What a brave thing to do! Fire is my worst fear and I had a horrid nightmare about it the other night.

I would like to think I'd be brave enough to do the same thing as you. Honestly, I think you're amazing risking your life like that!

Can you stay in your house now? Is it safe? Will insurance cover the damage?

I really hope Spank will be ok once he gets over the shock of it- poor thing.

Once again, I'm SO glad you got them all out.....

Thank god you and the rabbits are okay! I think that Spank will come around. He just needs time to get over the fright he had.

I agree with pla725, please get them checked out just to be sure.

You are a very deticated bunny owner, and I can see that you love your rabbits very much.

I would definitely do the same thing for my rabbits. They are like family!

Glad to hear you are OK... and your animals - I would have done the same thing.

Can you live in your room safely? How is the smoke damage - is it safe to breathe the air in?

Denise

Wow. Thank God you are ok. I think anyone with pets has this same nightmare, especially bunnies because its not like they can call out for help (or run out of the house).

I am beyond thrilled that everyone is ok. Let us know if you need anything!

*hugs*

Haley

Thank goodness everyone is safe.

I would have done the same also hubby read that also he said hope everything turns out ok.

Your in my thoughts and prayers

No, it was the BEST night ever because no one died! No one is in the hospital (or vet hospital) with third degree burns covering 90% of the body. Your family isn't planning your funeral.

It was the BEST night ever because you're here to tell us about it. You're a hero!

Thank God!
