I have been asked several times for "Easter" bunnies, most for children. I've seen that other users have also. It seems like a good idea(to me at least) if bunnies aren't sold starting two weeks beforeEaster. No bunnies from shelters etc. When I lived in Cali, my mother and I went to get a cat from the shelter and found out that Cali stops adopting out black cats in the month of October because of what happens to them on Halloween.

I know it's unlikely that anybody will really take any interest in this but it seems helpful to me. I hate seeing awful stories of easter bunnies.:X

I brought this up with a few days ago because I feel the way you do and I was wondering how people worked around it. Many of the breeders here responded saying that they work their litters in a way as to not have any babies avaiable at easter or simply not sell them at that time.

I have been slowing down my adoptions with the SPCA though I am not sure what the true policy is. I am dreading the weeks to come after Easter however. Omg... We are already in over our heads.

Wouldn't it be great if everyone got together and decided not to sell them for easter? Baaaah we can dream can't we? Until then, let's keep working at it :biggrin2:

I agree msbinky if everyone would agree not to sell Easter bunnies. That would make a huge difference - I keep hoping people will get educated and realize that a rabbit is a living beingand not a toy, or gift for someone. We can hope for the day, but not hold our breath in the meantime.

In the month and half after Easter last year I had dozens of emails a week wanting to dump Easter rabbits... things like... turns out my kid is allergic...kid doesn't want to clean the cage...we don't have time for him...he smells....he doesn't like to be held... etc. etc. :(

We don't really do adoptions because our purpose is as a permanent home for buns, but I would never adopt anywhere near Easter time - or Christmas for that matter. Our local shelters don't stop adopting out buns at Easter, and a few of them don't spay and neuter either, so the cycle just starts anew. I wish all shelters and breeders for that matter would not adopt or sell at Easter.

Thank goodness for those good breeders. I think I'm going to talk to our HRS and our local humane society to see if they do that or will.

It just makes me so sad and so angry. Asa college student, I can't afford to take in any more buns than the three I already have. If we can combine this with the "make mine chocolate" ads, maybe we can get somewhere.

I am in the one who does the english postings for the SPCA and I have been writing posts about the make mine chocolate and asking people to abstain from adopting on impulse and to avoid encouraging this Easter trend. It really sucks... I have no idea what it will be like after easter really. It worries me. I am not allowed to give actual numbers of how many buns we have (because the administration doesnt actually know LOL)but they are up there already :?

I am thankful that responsible breeders will avoid Easter bunnies and of course I know that some rescues and shelters avoid it as well.

Sadly it's the pet stores that are a major culprit. I went by my local pet store today to see and of course, right up front and center were a load of adorable looking baby lops and others. Their "enclosure" was decorated for Easter complete with decorated eggs and stuffed toys. The sign was the clincher that made the whole thing depressing--"Take home your Easter bunny today! $29.99 each". :(

I know. I already saw the pet stores loading up.:XThere were three aquariums of different kinds of rabbits including mini lops and mini rexes and in the back there was an aquarium of a mother and her approximately 5 week old babies.

I'm not going into pet stores, nor am I checking the Phoenix craigslist ads. The "easter bunny" stuff is already happening :X. I saw an add for 4 week old baby bunnies.

It's too heart breaking. After Easter will be more heart breaking, as everyone will be dumping their "easter bunnies".

It's a saaaaaad time for bunnies around this time. I am going to cuddle my Morgan like crazy because I looked at the time I got him and how old he was...and figuered he was most likely the result of an "easter bunny dump" :(.

yeah, i've seen it too!

I work in a children's photography studio, and the other day I answered the phone and this woman was asking if we took pictures with live rabbits, I told her "No", I also told her that I own 2 rabbits myself, but they are NOT props!!! How frustrating and wrong!

I wish someone could get a commercial aired on tv about not buying easter rabbits. Like on animal planet, or on cartoonchannels or something.
