Hi guy's I've not posted on here for ages but still read posts.

We cut toffee's nails tonight (I held, paul chopped) and he's cut hisquick. He didn't flinch at all but it's bleeding really bad. We wipedit with water and an antiseptic wipe, and he gave it a lick. (Toffeenot paul) but it's still bleeding.

Will it be OK?

Please will someone reassure us (we both cried :()

What else should we do? might it get infected, we go away on saturday and my parents are bunny sitting:(

Ok, have you got any quickstop? (think that'swhat it's called)That will stop bleeding, flour canwork as well, you really need to get the bleeding stopped.

There's a bit about it in here, says it's not a major injury:)

Nail Clipping

There's stuff you can buy that will stop thebleeding. If not you might want to go to the vet. A small little cutcan be REALLY bad for animals.

Nevermind.. thanks for the name of the stuff Micheala.

Here's a good article that could help:
http://exoticpets.about.com/cs/resourcesgeneral/a/nailtrim.htm

It says:
When Accidents Happen
No matter how careful you are, you will likely accidentally hit a nailquick and cause some bleeding at some point. Don't panic. Here are somethings that will stop the bleeding:
  • a commercial product suchas Kwik-Stop (a powder) or any styptic powder. These sting but arehighly effective. Take a pinch of powder and press onto the tip of theaffected nail after wiping away the blood.
  • cornstarch or flourcan also be used in a similar manner
  • you can press the affectednail into a bar of mild soap
  • for minor problems, simplyapplying pressure to the tip of the nail may be effective
No matter which method you use, make sure the bleeding has stoppedbefore placing the animal back in its cage, or leaving the animalunattended. While nail trims sometimes seem very daunting, especiallyon a nervous and jumpy pet, doing nail trims is really not difficultand will become much easier if they are done regularly as part of yourpets' maintenance.

The articles comes from the Bunny 101 section of the forum, in the section about Nail Clipping, here:
http://rabbitsonline.net/view_topic.php?id=12075&forum_id=17

And from inside this thread that's in the Nail Clipping section:

Also, just browse around the different articles in the above links. Lots of information...

Hope that helps!

Hugs to you and yours!

A thousand thankyous.

I wiped it again and we put flour on it, it's stopped now. He doesn't seem phased, it's just us that seem to be bothered.

I think I'll be up in the night checking in him!

I've got to do Parsnip's now (agghhhh) at least his are white and pink! Phew

Oh! Another thing I thought of...

I've heard that if your bunny's nails are dark-colored, you can shine aflashlight underneath and it'll help you to see where the quickis. :)

:) Cornstarch is the best thing for it if youdon't have that quickstop stuff. When I cut my buns nails, Ialways have a little bowl of cornstarch next to me just in case.

Thanks everyone, I know it's agessinceI started this post but we were going away the next dayand have just come back.

I used the flour on Toffee's nail and it worked fine, I think we were more upset than he was!!!

I shall try the flashlight thing next time and see how it goes.

Thankyou :D

There is a powder called quickstop that stopsthe bleeding very fast! Also I just clipped my rabbit's nails the otherday but didn't have any quickstop but you can also use flour and bakingsoda I think. Your rabbit will just clean himself and everything willbe fine!

It is kind of like when we clip or bite our nail too short it starts bleeding:D
