I'm upset and need to kind of vent, so sorry if this is a bit long. :?

My pride and joy, my little gal Fungus the guinea pig is sick. She's always had a big tummy, and her stomach has always been very large, but the vet said it was never a problem, she was just fat. This was long ago. Well, latelyit hasswelled and is very bloated looking. She's EXTRMELY heavy too. I originally thought Bloat, but she is acting completely fine. Running around, eating her veggies and hay and screaming at me if her bowl isn't full with pellets. Bloat causes a guinea pig to feel bad, lack of appetite, ect. It's also gas related, so it doesn't cause weight gain. She was 2.6 pounds last time she went to the vet. I am getting her weighed Monday and then taking her to the vet to be looked at.

I'm really thinking it's a tumor in her stomach...

It's so depressing. She is the SWEETEST guinea pig in the world. I litterally mean it. She LOVES people, and will scream at you everytime you come into the room if you do not pet her instantly. She loves to be held, and falls asleep in the recliner when we're walking tv together.

I feel so bad, this poor guinea pig has gone through EVERYTHING. She was originally ordered at a pet store to be sold. Because everyone thought she was 'ugly' she was never sold. After a few months of not being bought, she was put into a tiny holding cage in the back of the petstore where she saw for nearly a year. Then, she was adopted out by a psycho who bought her for reasons unknown. 3 months later, he calls the store and says he hates the guinea pig, and wants to return her. He threatens that if they do not take her back, he'll drop her off in the woods. They told him to bring her back. He arrives the next day with her in a box inthe trunkof his car...

After being put back out for sale for a few months and not being sold, once again she goes back into the back room for another few months. She develops mange mites, ear mites, skin fungus, athritis, and twisted toes due to never having her nails properly trimmed. None of her diseases are ever treated while she was at the store. By the time I find out about her, she has all these problems, along with an advanced upper respiratory infection and an eye infection.

Imagine that: mange mites, ear mites, skin fungus, athritis, twisted toes, URI, and an eye infection. What a trooper!

She comes home with me and all that is treated. She looked HORRIBLE when I first got her. Swollen eyes, no hair, covered in scabs, nails longer than I have EVER seen, and the poor thing can barely breathe. Well, it's been a year, and she looks wonderful. And before all this, she has been doing wonderful.

ARGH! If it is a tumor, she doesn't deserve this. I'm hoping maybe she is just getting REALLY fat.

*Sigh* Here's my pretty girl's picture. Don't disturb her, she's hard at work on the keyboard.

Oh wow! She looks exactly like my oldguinea pig Tobby!

Poor girl :(. Gone through so much! Is tumors common in guinea pigs? Is there anyway the vet can do an x-ray to see? I hope she's justa bit chubby :(

 If it weren't for you, the poor girl would probably have passed away a long time ago. You're doing a great job!

Tumors are very common in guinea pigs. Females are usually prone to mammary and ovarian tumors. Stomach tumors aren't unheard of though. I am definitely going to request an x-ray from the vet on Monday. I am going to weight her Monday and see what she weights before I go to the vet. (Stopping in at the pet pharmacy where my mother works to weight her...) I'm hoping that maybe it is just my imagination that she feels much heavier. I would be THRILLED if that scale said 2.6 still, or even 2.7 or 2.8. She feels way over the 3 pound mark though, and anything over a 4 ounce gain in one month is not a good sign.

If, God forbid, the x-ray does show a tumor, she will definitely be getting surgery. She is only 3 years old, estimated, so she has many years left to go. I have 2 other rescues pushing 6 right now, and they act like hyper little babies!

Oh my....how could she not have been sold for so long? She's GORGEOUS!!!!

I will keep her (and you) in my prayers - be sure to update us and let us know!

Sorry she has such a rough start at life.. I think she is very cute!! Hope she is just getting fat and not anything else going on with her...

Bless, what a little luvvie... how could no-one have wanted her?! She reminds me of Flossie, one of my cousin's guinea pigs :)

I hope everything goes well for her at vet's... my fingers are crossed!

I will keep you both in my prayers. I used to have guinea pigs and they are the best friends. They have such personality. One of mine I had in college and she would sit on my shoulder and I would walk down the hall of the dorm and she never moved, no one saw her thru my hair and all my friends loved her. She would squeak when me or my roommate came in the room but we never got caught. She got us thru many a stressful day at college. I hope yours is ok. Maybe she is just eating more or has a food allergy that makes her intestines swell. That happened to another animal I had. Hang in there and let us know how the vet appt goes.

Believe it or not 2.6 pounds is a normal weight in pigs. I have 6 my self. The lightest one I have is 1.75 pounds and my heaviest is 3.75 pounds.

She is beautiful, if she is eating fine, no cries while going potty, no weight lost ect, you should not have to worry much. If you feel she needs exrays do it.

Here is my big fat boy who is 1500 grams

Sorry to post all them pics but I figured you would like to see how big they are. Don't be scared. Pigs can weigh up to 4 pounds.

Thanks SweetPea! Your piggies are BEAUTIFUL! She is acting fine right now, more active than ever. Pooping is great, peeing, eating, drinking like a horse. I'm just worried about a tumor. She weighed 2.6, which was good, but she's gained a good bit of weight within the month. She's going to the vet this Friday to be checked out, she needs a check-up anyways.

We're adopting her a friend! Well, he's a rescue, I'm getting him Thursday. His name is Dexter, and he's a HUGE 4.5 pound orange and white boy. He's being neutered, of course, so he won't get to meet her for quite a while.

I got to see pics of him. Ohhhhhhhhhhh a 4.5 pounder. I love chubby piggers.

maybe not a tumor, a cyst where she can be spayed if it needs removed.

we got all of our fingers, toes and paws crossed that she is fine and normal

Some do some don't. I know that most of mine don't. When I had Hairyette my long hair silkie, she adoredbaths adn would waddle in there, King in that pic was trying to get out on my arms.

My other one Checkers would try to jump out and try having 3 try doing that at the same time. lol

By the time I get them all bathed up My shirt is soaking wet from them trying to jump out.
