The 3 week old baby bunny we're fostering for the SPCA has developed a head tilt. I suspected he might have an ear infection because he kept one ear down all day yesterday, shook his head a bit and the ear felt warmer than the other one. I woke up this morning to discover he had the head tilt. He drank his kitten milk like always and then we took him to the emergency vet.

They prescriped novo-trimel twice a day for two weeks. He talked about switching to Baytril if that didn't work but I thought Baytril couldn't be given to baby rabbits, am I right?

I brought him home, syringe fed him his antibiotics, which he loved, syringe fed him some water and then tried handfeeding him some alfalfa hay which he wouldn't eat. I then mixed up some critical care and syringe fed him that and he ate it like a horse. He loved the stuff and ate about 6cc's worth. After that he had a few poops and now he's settled down ina carrier, propped up against a towel.

He hasn't started rolling yet but he does have a pretty bad head tilt, poor baby. I'm staying optimistic though, he's eating and pooping and grooming me whenever I hold him.

My questions are - can he have Baytril if this antibiotic doesn't work? And also - how often should I be feeding him critical care? I'm giving him the kitten milk twice a day but before his head tilt he was grazing on hay all day off and on. Any hints as to how often I should feed him? Every few hours during the day and getting up once in the night?

Thanks for your help!

Ayglnu13 nursed a 4 week old baby through head tilt, and her vet prescribed Baytril and Benebac, so I'm guessing that Baytril would be okay for your baby. Here's the thread (and you could try pm'ing her for more info)

You can find more info on Baytril (Enroflaxacin) at the Rabbit Drug Dosage Calculator:
http://homepage.mac.com/mattocks/morfz/rx/drugcalc.html

It says that it may cause cartilage damage in young animals. I've only heard of that in dogs, but who knows if that affect has been studied in rabbits.

What's the generic name for novo-trimel?

I have no idea about the feeding schedule because he's so young. Maybe one of the breeders could advise?

I hope he'll be okay.

AFAIK baytril isn't recommended for young animals but in serious cases it might be used anyway as the possible side effects out weigh the risk of not using it.

The baby died during the night.

Thank you naturestee and tamsin for your help; it was much appreciated.

I am sorry to hear the baby didnt pull though.. I feel your pain. It doesnt matter if the time spent with us is long or short.. You did your best.

Thank you everyone for your kind words; it's very appreciated.

And Pet_Bunny, thank you for taking the time to do that - it's beautiful and a lovely tribute to a very sweet bunny.

Awww, Elizabeth, I'm so sorry. :hug1

And also sorry for being so late with my condolences, I wrote a long message days ago that I thought I posted(I was cutting and pasting it for the SARS board as well), I don't know where it went. I knew that I hadlost the SARS postin transit, but until now, I thought the originalwasat least in this thread. :banghead :(

From the cases I've seen, I think the odds are 10 to 1 against these babies surviving, in spite of the best of care.

I've posted queries here and in Etherbun asking about the best antibiotic treatments,I'll let you know anyinfo.

You really did agood job with that baby, so sorryit didn't work out. :cry2
