Okay, first let me explain my situation. I livein Baton Rouge, and we were hit by hurricane Katrina. The area I livein has been turned into one bigFEMA evacuee's area, and Ihave FEMA trailers sitting on top of us. It would be fine except forthe fact that we are having a LOT of problems. Lot of crime, stealing, ect. That brings me to this...

I have a 2 year old boy bunny that has stayed indoors from day one. Before Katrina happened, I would walk him outside on a leash a goodbit, and set him outside on our front deck for some sunlight. He can nolonger go for walks, and it's very unsafe for him to hang out in ouryard or on our deck now. (So far our dogs have had rocks thrown atthem, and my cat's been used as target practice with a pellet gun. Idon't wanna think about what they'd do to my rabbit...).

His cage is in the back master bedroom, and it's a large cage. About 5foot wide, 3 foot deep, 3 foot tall. BUT, since the FEMA trailers havebeen moved in on both sides of us, it blocks most of the sunlightcoming in through the windows. (Yeah, the trailers are sitting nearlyon top of us). So, he gets daylight until about 10am, and that's it.The sun dissapears behind the trailers.Well, the back bedroomis the quietest, as we have weenie dogs that stay around the rest ofour home. He loves dogs, but HATES noise. Can't stand it when theybark, so he can't really go into another room where they are alwaysbarking and the tv is always blaring, ect. So, all this rambling bringsme to my question:

Would it hurt if I mounted a UVB light above his cage? I mean, to mountit on the wall, about 5 feet or so above the top of his cage, that wayhe'll have something resembling daylight for him, so he's not alwaysstuck in complete darkness. I thought of UVB, becauseI ownreptiles, and I know the UVB bulbs resemble natural daylight, and letoff no heat.

Instead of a reptile UVB, which are quite strong, I was thinking ofbuying an aviary UVB light. I don't need the UVB, which is what I amworried about harming him. If anything, I could get the UVB fixture, and put a clear floruescent fish tank bulb in it. Just somethingthat'll give him daylight, without harming him.

Any feedback or suggestions are highly appreciated. Thanks!!

That doesn't sound like a funsituation. I know everyone's still stressed from beingdisplaced and all, but how can they take it out on innocent animals?

I don't think a UVB bulb would hurt. I think there are lightsmade to approximate daylight that fit in normal light bulbsockets. Maybe that would be easier?

Or you could just use a normal light in the room. Rabbitpellets are supposed to have vitamin D in them, so they don't needsunlight to get all their vitamins.

I don't think that the bulb wouldhurt. But, as has been mentioned, the pellets do have vitaminD in them. Back a few years, I had a verylarge number of rabbits, and they did not get sunlight. Itdidn't seem to hurt them. I did, however, feed onlypellets.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. He does getrabbit pellets daily, as well as 24 hour access to timothy hay, and theoccasional bunny-healthy treat about once to twice per week.

My concern was mainly if being in the dark a good bit was making himdepressed. I know if I was in the dark that often, I'd really bedepressed. Like I said, he gets to come out of his cage a good bit andhop around the house and all, but whenever he's back in his cage, it'susually pretty dark, and that makes me feel sorry for him. I justwanted to make sure that getting UVB from a light source wasn't goingto harm him.

Thanks for the replies!!
