I am thinking of getting a rabbit to house train(ive read a couple of short books about it and it seems like aninteresting challenge). I have not yet purchased a rabbit but i have afriend whos parents rear rabbits to sell to restaurants andsupermarkets. Would these "farm rabbits" be appropriate to have as ahouse pet ? or are some breeds better suited to the indoors lifestylethan others. Please If anyone could give me any advice on this it wouldbe great. Thanks, Martin

House trained rabbits are awesome. I thinkyou'll find that many people on here have "house" rabbits. Pretty muchall breeds can make good house pets. It all depends on your personalpreference. I know from experience that you can have two rabbits of thesame breed and from the same litter and they can be complete opposites."Farm rabbits" or "meat rabbits" can make fine pets. As with all breedsit mostly depends on the individual rabbit. Some rabbits can be snugglebuns and others would rather get as far away from their "slaves" aspossible.

I would suggest visiting your local shelter orhttp://www.petfinder.org/ifgetting a rabbit from your friend doesn't work out.

I completely agree.

I currently have two "house rabbits" and they're WONDERFUL!One is litter-trained so far (the other was rescued on Sunday and isquite young...we're workin' on it). Maisie was quite easy tolitter train. We just put her in the box everytime she triedto pee outside it, and she almost immediately got the hang ofit. Flower is still six weeks old, and will have a cage(instead of her temporary large cat carrier...special circumstance, andI wouldn't recommend it) of her own come Saturday, and we will beginlitter training then. I don't expect it to be toodifficult at her age. :)

I also agree with BunnyLover about checking in bunny sheltersfirst. Then you can ask them all sorts of questions (butdon't forget about us!:)) before you take the bun home, and they willmost likely have a good amount of info to give you to take home aswell. :)

Yes, rabbits make wonderful house pets. As longas you keep up with cleaning there is absolutely no smell. They arealso very easy to litter train. My two bunnies have almost perfectlitter habits. Rabbits truly are a joy to have inside the house. Iwould also reccomend petfinder, that's how I found Devon and Amber:).

Hi marlos..im sure one of those farm rabbitswould be ok to have as a pet, what kind of rabbit are they?i know overhere where i live there is a market where they sell meat bunnies andthey are new zealand whites,i never knew about this market until my mumtold me a while ago,i wish i knew before because i would have gotten mybuns from there, but i am a big sook and i cannot visit places like thatanyway.

But im sure those bunnies will be ok for a pet,and if you choose to geta bunny somewhere else why dont you try a shelter, that way you aregoing to give an unwanted bunny a new life and a forever home

Breed doesn't matter at all. "Meat"rabbits can make wonderful pets. Spay/neuter helps a lot withlitterbox training and other behaviors, though.

Since you've never had a rabbit before, I'd recommend you check out theshelters and rabbit rescues. "Teenage" rabbits can be veryfrustrating, especially for someone who's never had a rabbitbefore. But shelters and rescues may have rabbits that arealready spayed/neutered and littertrained and make great housepets.

Oh, and here's a cute example of a pet New Zealand White, which is a very common breed of meat rabbit.
