I've been surfing a few old threads about the best rabbits foods and the best diet and I thought I would start a new one where we could all compare. I've been concerned that the diet I feed my rabbits is not the most healthy one so it would be nice to see what others feed their little ones.

Here is Benjamin and Twinkles Daily Menu:

Endless Supply of timothy hay and water

7am - Suparabbit Excel Pellets (Large bowl between the two of them) -this lasts until 8pm on average as they nibble through theday(http://www.burgesssupafeeds.co.uk/Pages/excelrabbit.html)

5pm - a few raisins or banana chips

8pm - A cabbage leaf each or a carrot or piece of apple etc

10pm - Suparabbit excel pellets (large bowl to share)

Rex (5.5 lb. Mini Rex) & Peanut (5 lb. Mini-Lop) - both are at healthy weights

7am 2 cups of fresh veggies (Romaine, raddicchio, parsely, Spring Mix, etc.)

3pm 1/3 cup Blue Seal Bunny 16 pellets

10pm 2/3 cup pellets

Fresh water and field hay at all times

Very limited snacks, usually dried bananas or canned pumpkin

*I should add, they share a cage and eat together ;)*

Apart from unlimited amounts of pasture hay andwater, my buns have a "green mix" in the morning. That is made up ofcarrot tops, chinese cabbage tops, broccolli leaves, celery leaves, rose leaves and wheat grass. (my kids grow the grass in tubs in thegarden) They have pellets in the evening. 3 times aweek they get "treats". Thats carrot, apple, a bit of bannana, dandilions, and the occasional grape. they also get one bunnybiscuit a day to help keep there teeth healthy :) They like homemadebiscuitsts the best or the one my vet makes..the commercial onces theywont touch. (fusspots) I also add a small fruit tree branch/twig tothere cages for them to chew on to keep there teeth from overgrowing. :)

Our bunnies all get unlimited Oat hay,and limited pellets, we don't do greens although I am thinking aboutslowly adding some in for some variety.

Treats are Craisins and bannana chips.

peapoo has a bowl of pellets, 2 or 3 vegetables, and either a banana slice or yogurt chip.......

i have a question though...if a bunny chews on something that has vinegar all over it is this ok?

Theodore (netherland dwarf) gets a small bowl(about 1/2 cup) of pellets, unlimited meadow hay and timothy hay, andevery night he getsa handful of fresh veggies - usuallyspinach and carrot slices, sometimes parsley and celery, sometimesbroccoli... depending on what I have fresh.

I feed him organic whenever I can.

I plan on starting a greenhouse for him (and me  ) I will growwheatgrass, parsley, spinach, carrots, broccoli, maybe some fragrantherbs - he loves cilantro.

Oh, yeah, and I don't give him tap water. He gets bottled water. He doesn't need fluoride and chlorine.

I don't think vinegar is bad for bunnies, but I have heard that they dislike it. I have used white vinegar as a repellant.

yeh....thats what ive been using to keep her awayfrom things or from chewing something....i was just wondering if thatwas bad..she hates it!

My bunnies diet is:

Morning (when ever I wake up- depennig on weekdays or weekends) 1/4 cup of pellets and handful of hay)

Late Afternoon (depends) dried papaya or dried apple

9:00pm Fresh water, small bowl of veggies (cilantro, parsley, babycarrots, celery (althoguh she's sick of it now..Hehe), celery leaves, and sometimes a slice or two of apple. She alkso gets her other 1/4 cupof pellets with a tsp of oats on it. She eats her hay msotly in thenight, so I remove the uneaten hay and give another handful.

I'm trying to get her half her veggies in the late afternoon, so I'mtrying tgo jsut take a few veggie pieces and mvoe them back a houruntil I get to the time.

Also, I don't think so, but would baking soda hurt rabbits? I put someof the bottem of her cage where she pees and she walked into it thenlicked her paws. It said on the box you can use under your cats literto keep it fresh so I doubt it would hurt her. The smell went away andit was smelling fresh so I was happy! :D

I believe in the 1oz/1 lb of bunny rule.

OPIE

- breakfast: 3/4 cup oxbow bunny basics T with a sprinkle of oats

(she should have about 1-1.5 cups for her size but she doesn't eat itso I give her less. I think its b/c she's pretty lazy andjust likes tonap all day so doesn't expend that much energyto require alot of food.)

- dinner: romaine, baby carrot and cilantro.

SNICKERDOODLE

- breakfast: 1/4 cup oxbow bunny basics T for breakfast with a sprinkle of oats

-dinner: romaine, baby carrot and cilantro.

BONBON

- breakfast: 1/4 cup oxbow bunny basics T for breakfast with a sprinkle of oats

-dinner: romaine, baby carrot and cilantro.

They get all get treats 2-3x per week. I don't give them treats everyday to limit their sugar intake.

example of treats: bananas, craisins, apple slices, dried pineapple/papaya

Unlimited hay and water at all times...

Vinegar will not harm your bunny. It isveryeffectiveas a cleaning agent b/c it works onthe chalky calcium deposits that the dried urine leaves. Someppl recommend mixing the vinegar with water but I don't think itsnecessary. If vinegar is a strong smell for you then mixingwith water will help curb that smell. Its also great for peestains on the carpet if your bunny has an accident!

VINEGAR RULES! hehehee

whoa lucky bun! ;)

My buns get tap water but I have the water purifier nozzle attached tomy tap spout. Water filters clean the water by reduce chlorine, badtaste, odor and byreducing harmfulcontaminantsto make your water healthy anddelicious so not only does your water taste better, it is better foryour bunny.

Personally I just thinkpurified water tastesbetter(tap is yucky IMO) so when it comes to my buns... If Iwouldn't eat/drink it, why would my buns want to?

Every morning I give my boys their breakfast:

1/4 cup of Purina Rabbit Chow each (the green bag) with about a tablespoon of rolledoats on top

I try to give them a variety of veggies, but their favorites are greenleafed and romaine lettuce, and parsley. William hatescilantro and carrots, but Charlie loves them.

I also give them a crazin or two a day, and a piece of apple or bananaabout twice a week, andunlimited oxbow timothy and water.

Let's see...

Odin:
Free feed Kaytee Forti-diet pellets for a growing boy, free feedorchard or timothy hay, a couple craisins at night to bribe him backinto his cage and a couple Shredded Wheat pieces throughout the day. Also a salad consisting of parsley, an occasional baby carrot, and apapaya tablet.

Loki/Tyr:
3/4 of a cup of Kaytee timothy pellets, free feed orchard or timothyhay, a craisin a day each, a couple pieces of Shredded Wheat, someparsley, occasional baby carrot, and a papaya tablet each.

Fairly simple but it works well for all three and myself.

Our bunnies get purified water aswell. The well water here tastes funky coming starightoffwell. We had a purifier installed for us and anextension in the bunny room.

Diet:

Wilbur and Frodo, 1/8th cup Oxbow Bunny Basics T

Melody and Ali - 1/4 cup '' ''

Based on body weight. They get one feeding atnight. They have unlimitedtimothy hay all thetime. Orchard or meadow grass hay when I can get it inaddition to the timothy.

At night they each get a big plate of salad - mixed greens from therecommended lists atthe HRS web site. Lately theyhave been getting 3-5 Craisins each everyother night. Theymay geta square inch or so of fruit twice a week. They probably get about 2 and 1/2 cups very compressed greensaltogether.

Frodo is an extremely picky salad eater and will only eat fresh (notthe organic ones either) flat pea pods, the tiny inner leaves ofromaine and a bit of banana and apple. Neither Sandra or Ihave been able to get her to eat more salad. Fortunately sheis a hay hog.

Once a week they may get a 1/2 teaspoon of raw rolled oats as a treat on top of their pellets.

They also get unlimited apple branches fresh cut as chews.

I was just wondering with the papya tablets... Igot a bottle from a health food store. I asked the lady, and she saidit would be fine for rabbits, and my vet Ok'd it. She loves them, socan this be just fed as a treat? People use them to help theirdigestion, so I don't see how it would hurt a bunny. Or am I wrong?

There has been some controversy as to whether ornot it actually helps their digestive system but it can't hurt and theylove 'em.

About the vinegar -
Apple Cider Vinegar added to the drinking water (60cc to 1 gallon) issuppose to help prevent bladder sludge and stones. That is what myrabbit-savvy vet told me anyway. He is very into natural remedies, andmakes his own concoctions .
It (apple cider Vinegar) has a bit of a sweet taste that doesn't turnoff the rabbit. This is also good for dogs - in that it gives them ashiny coat.
In people, it is said to help relieve joint pain - and I've known people to drink it (mixed with water) and swear by it.
White vinegar I use for cleaning the litter boxes, and I spray areasthe little varmits pee on to prevent them from peeing there again .
I use bottled spring water too - as we have well water and it's high in lime content.
