Would this litterbox be okay?

Hey all!

When I got my bunny last year, I bought this litterbox, which I have been using without the grate.

Here is a picture from last year of my set-up with the litterbox (Rune was such a tiny baby then!).



Since then, I've gotten a bit annoyed with this litterbox. He uses it just fine, but he's prone to knock stuff out into the back corner which makes it a pain to clean. Also, it doesn't fit well through the cage's door, so I almost spill the litter when I put new in.

I bought one of these to use as a travel litterbox when I have to take him elsewhere when I'm out of town:

And it has been working really great for that purpose. Really easy to pick up and take elsewhere, it's big enough for him, he's perfectly happy to use it, and I realized... wouldn't it be more convenient if I used that litterbox as his main litterbox normally?

1. It is flexible, so I can get it in and out of the cage.
2. It's deeper, so he will be less likely to kick stuff out of it.
3. The top of the litterbox also will help block him from kicking poop and litter into the cage corner.

But is there any reason why I shouldn't use it as a permanent litterbox?



Here it is in the cage now (please excuse the mess!). Yes, it covers up the wooden hay feeder, but he pretty much never uses it anyway.

Both look fine. I bought cat pans at Petco for ours.

If he uses it and doesn't chew on it, then it's fine. Since you put generous hay in the litter box, there really is no need for the wooden hay feeder. That wooden hay feeder isn't being used much because the openings are too small to provide easy access to the hay. I'd consider just removing it as it is only taking up space.

Good eye about the hay feeder! It's actually been gone for awhile after I realized it wasn't working out. That's an old picture from when I still had it in there.

One other thing--my pans will fit inside of an apple box from the grocery store--the ones with a top and bottom. I cut a hole in each where the hand grip holes are and keep the top on when cutting. It gives the bunnies a place to hide out and contains the mess better and they like chewing too--just make sure there are no photo quality pictures as they are printed on plastic--the ink used to put ID and stuff is vegetable based and it's OK.
