hello!

so i found a vet near me, it's a new one since my old place closed down. i emailed them if they treat rabbits and they said "We see rabbits regularly, however, if there is potentially a more complicated issue or procedure that is required, we do often refer out to specialty care clinics as our vet does not specialize in bunnies."
only the pets are allowed in due to covid so i'm not really sure if i want Odyssey going in herself...

what would you do? is it okay to forgo this routine checkup for this half of the year because I can't find a good vet yet?
 
I would ask to be referred to their specialist vet clinic. They sound like they probably know about rabbits, and will probably also do routine checkups and general vet care.

And yeah, if Odyssey is healthy, it’s okay to miss a vet check up.

I asked which they refer to, and the clinic is about 2 hours away and $200 for a checkup which I find super exensive. Is that a normal price?

Okay thanks. How important are routine checkups then if she’s in good condition?
 
Ah wow. Yeah, you may just need to keep looking. Rescues nearby may have a vet, or a list of vet recommendations, and the HRS has a list that is sorted by state that you can look through if you’ve not seen it already. Vet List | House Rabbit Society

And unless they’re doing X-rays and blood work, $200 is super expensive for a routine check up. I would keep there number though for emergencies.

I still take my boy to the vet every six months because I just like knowing that he’s healthy. My vet does a good check, she’ll ask how he is doing at home and if he’s eating and behaving normal (the answer has almost always been yes, aside from when Athena died). Then they’ll do a ears-to-tail check, it’s thorough and takes about 15-20 minutes. We only pay a min of £120 a year {unless he gets sick} but the preventative care is a lot better. I’m sure an annual check up would be fine though, or as long as you’re doing everything that the vet would do at home, you may be able to get away with just going to the vet for emergencies

I do want to take her in as she hasn't been in a year but I might wait until COVID dies down a little more first.
Oh I've seen that link before- checked it and nothing near :/
 
If they are truely a specialist that all sounds completely normal.
Lots of rabbit vets can deal with normal bunny problems but hitting serious issues like liver lobe torsions you are stepping into some serious business.

Routine checkups are often basics like bloodwork and checking teeth and such. You dont need a specialist clinic for that.

Looked at those websites- they're not exactly specialists just normal exotic vets.
Okay got it.
So a normal vet is fine? SHould I still be worried about bringing her in?
