Hi all. My little guy is getting neutered tomorrow. I've watched a ton of videos on post care and have a pretty good idea what to expect. I was curious what your experiences have been with housing post care? I know I'll need to erect his 4x4 ex pen again, but for how long will he need to stay in there? 1-2 days? Longer? I expect to keep him separated from other house pets for a week or two after as well. Just curious what worked well for everyone else?

I kept mine in a smaller pen for 3-4 days post neuter until they started behaving as normal again. I then made the pen normal size but they did not get to free roam until 1 month post neuter (although this was mostly due to bonding two rabbits rather than a healing thing). I didn’t add anything to the cage that they could hop up on to until 2 weeks post surgery. When they came home they wanted to hide away to recover so I put a large cardboard box in the pen and put hay and veggies all inside so if they felt like eating they didn’t have to go far. I also put the water dish just outside as well so everything was close. Wishing your little man a speedy recovery :)

Thank you this is very helpful!

Neutering is less invasive, so they usually only need less than a week for recovery before they can go about their usual running and jumping. Your vet should give you instructions, but I would give it at least 3-4 days.

The immediate concern post neuter is keeping them warm(they can get hypothermic after anesthesia), making sure you are sent home with at least 2-3 days of pain meds(usually meloxicam, preferably dosed at the higher dosage range of 0.6mg/kg twice a day), and making sure they start eating by the next morning(no more than 24 hours since they last ate).

Yes thank you. I did get meds to administer for 5 days. Was advised to keep him as inactive as possible for 7-10days. He did great! So much so he went in at 8am and was released by noon! Vet said he did wonderfully and he's been eating some the minute he woke up post surgery. He's a little tired but acting normal and eating and pooping like nothing happened. Proud of my little guy 😊
