Hello! Hopeful someone can help...

My bun (3 years old, male neutered Rex) was at the animal hospital overnight last Monday (a week ago). He was showing signs of GI stasis (sluggish, not eating, low temperature). They kept him overnight, discharged him the next day and he has gotten better each day and he seems to be doing really well.

His appetite is great again and his activity levels are almost back to normal (haven't seen him flop on his side or do any binkies again yet, but boy does he run to attack his food!) They subscribed a mild painkiller and a probiotic, which I've been giving him nightly.

They gave him subcutaneous fluids for the suspected GI stasis. They also gave him an injection of penicillin because his temperature got a bit high while he was there and they'd been having some animals come in with an illness that was going around. The penicillin was a preventive against that.

His Sub Q fluids all absorbed within a couple of days but he was left with a funny lump on his tummy--it's about 2 inches in diameter, dome-shaped and "firmly soft" like a gummy bear. My boy was hopping carefully at first so the bump might have been bothering him, but now it doesn't seem to bother him unless you touch it; he can tolerate it a little--though I don't want to press hard nor bother him because he generally doesn't like his tummy touched much anyway.

The vet is aware but doesn't seem overly concerned since he is eating well and otherwise seems fine. We have a recheck visit in 3 weeks.

Has anyone seen this in their buns? Any idea what this might possibly be? The only thing I can think of is a hernia but I don't know if those happen overnight like this did. He's had fluids before and been fine. He hasn't had any abdominal surgeries besides neutering before I adopted him (10 months ago).

Thanks much in advance!!

Weird. Maybe email a picture to a different vet and ask what they think? Getting a second opinion should help. Are you sure it was GI stasis? Could it have been something else that you were unaware of?

That’s distressing the vet would shrug that off :(.... I would send them the pictures and or get a second opinion. It could be a hernia of some sort. It needs to be looked at since it causes your bunny pain and discomfort especially when touched. Please keep me updated! Don’t give up on fighting for your bunnies health.
