Help! My rabbits who I’ve had since mid October have started digging in their litter box. When we got them we set up two small, plastic grated litter boxes. We have since swapped out for a large one without a grate around December since we had to clean it less often. Every thing was going well up until a week ago when one of my rabbits (solstice) decided to dig half the contents into the plastic floor of their enclosure and into their water. I had to clean this mess right before leaving and when I was home there was another mess (slightly smaller). They did it three times since then, I’ve never actually seen solstice do it, but she woke me up the third time and I went to look and she was digging but stopped when I walked over with my phone for light. She has been doing it every night and just did it while I was in the shower, emptying almost her entire large litter box. Sorry for the excessive long post.

Maybe your bunny would love having a digging box which they can play with.

How old are your bunnies and are they spayed ?

The one digging is a little over a year old, and she is spayed. She is bonded to her mama who is a little over 2 and also spayed

Then fix a digging box, so she can dig as much as she like. Theirs a reason why I fill up and step into bunny holes in my bunnies runs outdoor. My doe love digging but it comes to different time, like one month she’s head over heel for digging deep huge holes and burrow. Then she stop for a few months and then start again. When she didn’t have the chance to dig, she would scratch the doors like crazy.

Also it’s quite easy and cheap to fix a digging box :)

If she still want to dig in the litter box, maybe use a grated litter box for a while and she might learn to dig in the digging box. Later you can change the litter box back to be none grated again. Because digging is the natural behavior among bunnies and some a more a digger than you can expect.

oh Okay. I was going to suggest putting hay on top. That may prevent the digging (but not always -- depends on the rabbit). Maybe having hay on top (and more added on top each day) will curb the digging.

Having a separate dig box, as already suggested, is fun for bunny (though some may turn it into a litter box).

My rabbit likes digging. We made him a box which he loves. I sometimes sprinkle pellets in it for him to forage for. Al also put a flat piece of cardboard in any corners he likes to dig in.
