Reuniting Bunnies After Spay

Hi,

We had our girl buns spayed on Tuesday and they both seem to be pretty much back to normal now. When we took them in to be spayed they travelled with their partner but unfortunately when they got home they sat together quietly for a couple of hours but then both boys started bothering the girls causing them to hop around a lot and it was obvious they just wanted to be left alone and did not appreciate being bothered. We decide to split their cage in half with a couple of panels so they could still sit together and interact but so the girls could also have some peace and quiet and not harm the healing process.

I’ve been trying to look up when it would be safe for them to be together again (so the girls considered to be fully healed) and all the recommendations seem to say at least month before reintroducing but I’m not sure if this is for bonding completely new rabbits and is actually necessary for bunnies that have lived together before does anyone have any experience or ideas with this?

I wouldn't seperate them that long, a few days until it's healed up, then letting them together at times when they are less active, with spots to hide or discourage bothering them, like very low tables to go under, if no problems pop up leave them together.

The only thing I would recommend is to remove anything they can jump on as the stitches are still healing and can rip open if they jump. I would remove these objects for at least 2 weeks after surgery.

I don't know how your vets over there do it, but we didn't see any sticthes in our bun, just a greyish substance we thought is glue, and he had been hopping around completely normal on day two, jumping onto beds and stuff (they're pretty high, so we discourage that for now) and my bun seems to be doing fine. But yes, nothing other than the floor to jumo on sounds like a good ieda.

I think you have a male correct @Catlyn ? They typically use glue on males and stitches on the females.

Yes, we have a male, but i still thought it is a great idea to keep him from hopping around like bonkers , both to make him feel comfier, heal faster and make sure that even the glue can't tear open. But rabbits, not depending on genders, should be taking it easy at least a week or so after surgery.
That's what i've come to know.

Thank you everyone @Preitler it was really interesting to read about your success with a more tricky bond. I’m really hoping our pairs will go back together easily. It was such a shame as boys didn’t do anything horrid but seemed to be pestering for attention and everytime the girl hopped away he would just follow her everywhere so she couldn’t lie down or relax They came back the same day they had the surgery so were especially uninterested in socialising. I suppose it might be easier to keep them together if you have siblings neutered at the same time as you can’t explain to one bun why his friend won’t groom or play suddenly!

We took out all of the things they can jump on I wasn’t sure when I should put everything back to normal so will keep it simple for the next week or so
