Hi there so I’m looking for some information on sudden bunny/ rabbit death! My mom and i back in July purchased a 2 month old Rex bunny from our county fair ! Took her home and everything has been fine until Tuesday morning , sadly she became ill , and today she passed away at the vet ! So my mom noticed she was very lethargic, which was not her normal behavior she knew that something was wrong, so my mom brought her to get her fluids because the vet was closed , so the next day on (Wednesday) she took her to the vet they took her temperature and she was 98 so they gave her pain medication if she was in anydiscomfort / fluids / and syringes full of liquified feed , she was not eating at the time and did not want to be fed ! The vet said if she was not getting better to bring her back , she was not getting better so my mom brought her back this morning her temperature and she was at 92 which anytime it’s lower than 90 it’s a 50/50 chance they make it out .... they did and x ray and there was no blockage , heart rate seemed to be fine and her breathing was fine .... were so in shock and disbelief of what could’ve happened ??? My mom has gotten a Christmas tree Friday evening , the bunny played underneath maybe chewed on a few branches but not a lot , i don’t know if that maybe had something to do with it Looking for answers

One of my bunnies past suddenly recently too. You can never really know what happened unless there was clear signs. As for not eating, she may have had GI stasis (where the digestive system slowly shuts down and the gut stops working. A lot of things cause it)? Maybe your Christmas tree has toxins (even if you can’t smell them?). And I know that some bunnies just get really stressed. Did you change her enclosure recently? Were there fireworks? Loud noises, yelling? Was she injured? They’re so many things that come into play when it comes to rabbits. Was she vaccinated? I don’t know if you vaccinate bunnies where you live but we do in England.

Thank you for your response, she was not vaccinated but I’ve read here in the states that rabbits do not need to be vaccinated. My mom had not taken her to the vet, but was planning to in a month or two as soon as she got a little older to get her spayed! I have a rabbit of my own and he’s about two years old and I’ve had him around my Christmas tree for the last two Christmases and hasn’t seem to bother him wnd i know he does chew on some of the branches. I’m not sure it just seemed to be such an odd coincidence that three days after she got her Christmas tree the bunny gets sick and passes away. I do not live with my mom so i’m getting all the information from her, but she has not moved her cage or any thing like that. The rabbits personality was very skittish and she would get scared pretty easily so maybe there was a loud noise in the middle of the night but it’s unclear and a bizarre situation! I just want to make sure I keep my bunny safe and healthy, when something like this happens it just makes you wonder how much you don’t really know about rabbits and you want to prevent anything bad from happening to them
