While I’m here, I have another question. With my breed, sore hocks can be an issue. What level of “cured” do they need to reach to be put back on the table? I was under the assumption that the scab needed to be completely gone with normal pigmented skin, so basically just a bald spot, but at the last show I saw a girl showing Flemish Giants and I’m telling you, her rabbits’ hocks all looked like raw ground hamburger :( I have a junior I’d like to take to the next show, but she was part of an accident a few weeks back with a predator in the rabbitry so I’m also curious about her. She’s in great shape now but she has an area on her front right leg that is still a scab - about 1/2” by 1/2”. If it ends up scarring, would they penalize her for that? Id hope they wouldn’t, but I’m curious.
Thanks for any input :)

As long as it's not actively bleeding or infected sore hocks shouldn't be an issue on the table, but do remember that these rabbits are a representation of your herd and your care. I personally don't ever bring rabbits to show than are in anything less than perfect health, and that's what I'd like to see in others as well.

Healing wounds are the body are usually okay imo, things happen, but if it does come back with a white spot as a scar then it's a DQ. It's still not something I'd personally show though; I'd wait until she was completely healed.

Thank you!

The doe that brought the question on was purchased with sore hocks already. She was our first purchase and I didn’t check the rabbit before we left. I take the blame for not checking, and didn’t even bring it up with the original breeder. She has two legs already and we really want to finish her and I’ve been waiting - for months - to get her totally healed. By what you said, I could have taken her to the last two shows. She hasn’t had active bleeding since we bought her but the scabs are being very slow to disappear. I put her in a smaller cage and lined it with the plastic cage resting mats, started treating with hemorrhoid cream, and she’s been slowly but steadily improving.
Fingers crossed on the one with the injury -I didn’t think she’d be penalized but wanted to check. Again, thanks for your help!
