hi everyone! my bun is an outside rabbit and I really want to make sure he's getting enough exercise. he has a hutch and run. I was thinking about taking him out on a leash. I currently have one that I use occasionally. he seems to enjoy running around while I follow behind him. what do you guys think about leashes? he seems fine with it. how often can I take him out on it? we usually just stay in the yard. attached is a pic of his current leash. ( he doesn't fit into the regular fabric harnesses). all advice appreciated!

You should find a safer harness.

Just make sure your bunny it’s used with picking up and can tolerate you getting close.

Also if your bunny start to run because of being scared better to drop the leash. This it’s only being startled, chased by something it’s pick up as fast as you can.

Myself often let my bunnies go out to eat grass or run around.

They love getting out, just have to keep watch for dogs or all the cats that walks nearby. Not easy living near a forest, many people let their dogs run loose in the forest and during hunting season mooses will walk near the bunnies and myself can walk into them.

They are huge, worst are when they get drunk on apples and walk into the yard hanging with the outdoors bunnies. I always worry they will destroy the outdoor run and make one of my bunnies escape.

what kind of harness do you recommend? he's ok with me picking him up. There are no cats or dogs in my neighborhood... besides a couple of strays now and then (even if there were, I usually take him to our fenced in yard). wow sounds tough @Hermelin. thanx for the advice!

Y-harness or chest harness. When the bunny pulls the harness won’t put that much pressure on the neck as a normal H-harness. Perfect for just walking.

On the picture you can see the harness dosen’t pull at the neck instead it goes down to the chest shaping a Y. Don’t really have great picture on them on my bunnies.

thanx for the pic! where can I pick one of those up? he doesn't usually just walk; he also loves to run around the yard...

Don’t know where you can get them, myself ordered my harness so they are fitted after my owns bunnies measurements. It becomes safer that way and more comfortable for the bunny.

Maybe someone else can help, I only know for countries near my own. My harness was posted to me in the mail ^^

But you should also have people that sew and costumes made harness for bunnies. It’s pretty normal, just in my country I know of 10 different sites and insta accounts :)

@blueeyes is the harness i have now ok? not sure what its called. i posted a pic of it earlier

ok thanx so much @Watermelons. the pics were really helpful. where can i buy one of those?

what size do u think ill need? he's a mini lop.

Uhm.. not sure if Hermelin mispoke or is labeling harness styles differently. It is the H-style harness that is the safe option. The other options are the dangerous ones.

There is a fuller discussion on this at the following thread. It also shows more photos of the safe H-style.

Hmm, I just think they name them different in my language.

Y- harness have the chest shape like Y

Chest-harness have the shape of a normal H-harness but with a strap.

While H-harness have no chest strap.

Also have bogsele, which are the best but bunnies can easily escape them if they are a puller or not fitted correct.

But now I know it’s only called H-harness in english ^^

Maybe it’s only in my language we separate the harness styles and named them differently.

We use a harness in the garden just in case the rabbits were ever to spook and run away (they never have but I worry) They’re not bothered by the harness thankfully. We’re based in the UK but they sell these ones in most pet shops (online and real shops!) and I think they’re good. No idea if it’s a y or h though

I take two of my rabbits to agility, and it is recommended that we use the H harness. The ones we get have no belly strap. I have not been happy with the harness because they often slip and my rabbit sometimes runs with her harness sideways on her body. I have been looking for a better harness. The H harnesses with the belly strap that I found are a bit hard to put on because there is no clip to open up the neck all the way, so it is a lot more work to adjust. Maybe I am just clumsy at it. I have been looking for videos on the best harness and how to put them on, but all the instructions I have found are on the H harness without the belly strap.

I have also put an H harness on my dwarf, but because his head is so round and small, he can wiggle out of it by going backwards, pulling against the leash. I still put the harness on him, but only when he is visiting the elderly. It give them something to grab if he moves and the person holding him gets startled. Someone grabbed him by the neck before when he was not wearing one.

@Redrabbit those harnesses like on your picture work out quite well for me too, as my lop bit through other types without the belly support.

Myself also have one of those harness, my bunny couldn’t move at all. Looked really funny how uncomfortable he was xD
