Won’t eat much, needs to eat

Okay so my bunny, Oreo is a dutch and on July 3rd I noticed she was acting weird. So I picked her up and there was a massive wound on her back. I raced her to the vet and they gave the care necessary to keep her alive and get her stable. She had gotten fly strike from the green bottle fly, I think.

On July 9th she came home and since then she has been not really eating much. She’ll eat a small piece of banana or lettuce and then become not interested. She doesn’t necessarily like the critical care and won’t eat it without being force fed. I guess what I was wondering was what I can give her so that she can stay healthy and gain back the weight she lost from being on an IV at the vet. She’s also on a type of medication to help her heal faster since its a big wound on her stomach/ back from the maggots.

Also, she has a friend she usually lives with and the vet said it would be okay to keep then together right away. I’m nervous to do that because what if they tear it open? Should I keep them separated?

Any help would be welcomed, thank you!

Shes drinking some, seems to be a normal amount she normally drinks. Also whats a slurry?

I usually feed critical care , but thats expensive and if you don't have time to go get it , i'd just blend pellets into a fine powder and combine with water

She might not be eating because she's been separated from her friend. It's not usually a good idea to split up a bonded pair unless absolutely necessary.

What medication(s) was she given at the vets and the ones she's currently on?

I had a pair of rabbits that had to be separated for about a week for medical reasons. When I tried to put them back together, they fought like they had never lived together, and they had to go through the bonding process again. Just know that if you put them back together, you will need to watch them for fighting. Spot may feel that he owns the whole cage now. But there is also a chance that they will be just fine.

Shes on baytril I think. And I just didn’t want Spot to re-open the wound because it’s pretty bad

Thank you! They’re in separate cages but are right next to each other. Usually they aren’t in those small cages though. But since I believe it was fly strike I took them out of their normal cages (I have another rabbit who is separated from Oreo and Spot because they attack the other one) and put them into different ones so the others can be 110% disinfected so this will NOT happen again. About a month ago my one, in my profile picture, died and I believe it was from the same thing. No idea why it’s happening now or anything though. I just don’t want to lose any more of my bunnies to a dumb fly that got in.

Can you put some screen or mosquito netting around the cages so the flies can't get in? Here is a good article on fly strike.

Hi! I hope all is well, my rabbit got flystrike in January last year, due to urine scalding. During the time after my vet instructed my to give one syringe of water and a syringe or so of food every few hours or so, to keep their digestive tract moving. We had to separate our two rabbits so they wouldn't fight (brothers right?) but we still introduced them time to time and watched closely so they stayed happy.

I highly recommend giving syringes of crushed up pellets, or if you can, critical care. Hold the rabbit and put the syringe in their mouth and slowly let food in, they should swallow, I recommend if they're not drinking do half a syringe of water too.

Update on Oreo.

The vet said she’s doing great and he likes the way its healing. His only worry is that she has a sort of hole in her leg that won’t heal and today I noticed a bump that isn’t supposed to be there. I suppose it is puss filled, since the hole in her leg has discharge that’s been coming out of it. I’m going to be taking her to the vet again on Wednesday and was wondering if thats too long of a wait?

I also had another question. She has a massive wound on her back and I was wondering if anyone knows if her hair will grow back where the wound was/ is.
