Hello,
Looking for any advice at all on post-surgical care. My 10 month old bunny has a dislocated hip and goes in for surgery in a couple days . I want to make it as comfortable as possible for him when he comes home from surgery and I know it’s important to get him eating ASAP. If anyone has any experience or just general advice I would really appreciate it!

I’m not sure if the surgeon will bandage him up or not but I worry about him chewing at the incision site since he did that when he was neutered and the cone did not work out well.

Thank you in advance!

I usually set up a recovery pen next to the couch(or where ever you will be for the majority of the time), that consists of a waterproof sheet over the carpet, a blanket over that, a wire pen around it(2x2, 2x3), a fleece pet bed, a low sided litter box with hay in it, and a water and food dish. I also provide a warm pack of some sort. I've used a heating pad on low under the fleece bed(with the waterproof sheet also over the heating pad to protect it) and with the cord on the outside of the pen. Though when I use a heating pad I only use it when I'm right there monitoring everything, otherwise I remove it for safety. I've also used a cotton bag filled with rice and heated in the microwave(check to make sure not too hot).

I've had the most success getting them to eat using their usual leafy greens like green leaf lettuce, cilantro, parsley, etc. And make sure the vet sends pain meds home with you to give your rabbit.

If a cone doesn't work, there are soft e collars or donut collars that might work better for your rabbit.

This link also has good post surgery care info for rabbits.
