Just looking for some advise & maybe reassurance.
We got our Rabbit last week, a English spot, he was just beautiful.
Seemed fine but as we only had him a week maybe there are things I missed, but got up this morning & he was dead in his hutch. Spoke to breeder & she suggested VHD (he hadn’t been vaccinated yet was booked in on Tuesday). I spoke to my vet, he said it could be a possibility but without a autopsy there’s no way of knowing for sure.
He hadn’t shown any obvious symptoms.
I just feel so awful & guilty fur not vaccinating him sooner.
I would like to get another but understandably cautious. How long should I wait & what’s the best way to ensure that if it was a virus that everything is clean & safe?
So sad, I know it was only a week but he already felt like part of our family.

Ask your vet for advice. So sorry for your loss, it just happens that way sometimes. All of ours are rescues, so they see a vet the day we get them. We have had a few that passed young and 3 that made it past 16 and a Mini Rex that was a month shy of 19. No "magic 8 ball" to predict things for you.

I'm very sorry for the loss of your rabbit. With it happening so quickly after you got him, even if you had gotten him vaccinated the first day, I'm not sure that it would have been enough time for him to have developed immunity.

To verify that rhd was the cause, tests would have to have been done on your rabbit right after death. I would just presume rhd was the cause and take the appropriate measures to disinfect. But unfortunately even then it is suggested to wait at least 4 months before bringing in any new rabbits. The only way to not have to wait would be to ask your vet if there are any tests that can be done now to rule out rhd1 and rhd2 as the cause.

When you do decide it's time to have another rabbit in your lives, just know that there are now two vaccinations that are needed, the rhd1/myxo vaccine and the rhd2 vaccine. And it may be easiest and safest to adopt a rabbit that has already had both it's vaccinations at the appropriate time so as not to have that additional concern.

Thank you very much for your replies, they have helped put things into perspective. I have spoken to another breeder & he has also assured me that sometimes sudden deaths happen & it’s very hard to tell why.
@JBun someone else also suggested that even with the vaccine it would of been to early for it to take effect.
Thanks again x
