First time bunny owner here and I’m a little unsure about appropriate proportions. My bunny is approx 14-16 weeks old (unsure on exact age) and seems lively and healthy. 3 weeks ago is was 1.8lbs but haven’t weighed him since. I currently feed him alfalfa (as much as he wants, always keep plenty out) and about 1/4 cup of Oxbow Young Rabbit pellets a day. The bag says to free feed but everything else I have read has suggested 75-80% hay and no more thank 15% pellets. I’m actually not sure how much percentage wise my bunny is exactly getting. I know he eats his alfalfa but always finishes his pellets and seems like he would eat more if offered.

I also am trying to introduce some greens in small amounts. I grow my own herbs indoors and let him try a few leaves of basil and rosemary. He absolutely gobbled them up, but again, was afraid to give more.

I know he mostly needs alfalfa/hay, but how can I tell what is an appropriate amount of pellets and greens? Is 1/4 cup too much or too little? Are herbs alone enough for his greens (I grow basil, thyme, rosemary, oregano, lemon grass and parsley) or should I be adding more vegetables to the mix

Any advice is appreciated!
 
I'm sure you've read about giving alfalfa hay to young rabbits, which is just fine. However, since alfalfa is so rich to rabbits, they sometimes resist when it comes time to switch them to a grass hay (around 6 months of age). For this reason, it is a good idea to mix in some timothy hay now so he begins to get used to it.

The Oxbow juvenile pellets are alfalfa- based anyway, so he'll be getting plenty enough alfalfa. In fact, if he is eating his hay well enough (about his body size every day) then it is fine to offer him more pellets. The only reason to cut back at this age is if he begins to reduce his hay eating in favor of the pellets. It is different with each rabbit, so you can offer more and see how he does with the continued hay eating.

With greens, take one that you know he likes -- like basil. Stick just with that one as you slowly increase the amount he gets. Keep an eye on his poos. Gradually he can have more until he works up to about 2 cups per day. Take your time. The reason to stick with one type is that if you offer a 2nd at the same time and he has a reaction, you won't know to which he is reacting.

Once you know he's fine with basil and you've increased to generous daily portions of basil without any change in poos, then you can try a different herb. At this point, you may continue with the generous amount of basil. Just try the new one, a little at a time and gradually increasing as before. Of course you'll need to cut back a bit on the basil once you get to the larger amounts of the other herb.

A variety of herbs (in time) is just fine. Mine get lots of basil since I grow it outside. Mint is another one I grow. I buy green leaf, red leaf and romaine lettuces in winter.
