Rabbit Play-pen?

Sorry I haven't been on for a while, I have been so busy!

Well...my mini rex Theo has a play pen, and the floor is concrete. I know he doesn't need to be on concrete because of his paws, but I don't know what to use for the flooring. I was thinking an old blanket would work, but thought that y'all might have some better ideas. I'm super worried about this problem because he recently lost a nail because of the concrete. I brought him inside and cleaned him all up and now have just been super worried that it is going to happen again. (I really need to cut his nails, it is just so hard. I would love tips on that)

What would y'all suggest for a roof so that he doesn't jump out? Will he jump out? His pen is around 2 ft tall and i'm always afraid that he will just clear the jump! If he does he could possibly get very hurt, as we have the lawn mower in the shed with him. (It is in a completely different area that he can't reach unless he got lose)

Two feet is definitely too short to contain any rabbit. Minimum is 30" but some rabbits can get over that. I wouldn't bother with putting a roof on something only 2 ft high. I'd suggest a higher pen.

Concrete normally works as a nail file and helps keep nails trimmed. Maybe they were just so long that it broke? This is the best video I've seen on nail clipping. Even a rabbit that doesn't like to be held, can't really go anywhere if it is on a table like they show. I tried it with a particularly difficult rabbit, and when he's on such a table, he behaves differently:


It's a good idea to have different surfaces on the floor of a rabbit cage. That gives him options. A cat bed, or folded fleece, even a piece of cardboard can give him places to go depending on his mood or if he's warm or cool.

Thanks so much! I will watch the video! In his cage he has a nice dog bed and a large sheet, his playpen is the only thing that has a concrete floor. Should I worry about his paws because he is a mini rex? I've read that they don't have that much fur on their paws, though he seems to have a lot. I mostly am just not wanting him to get Sore Hocks.

I understand that rexes are more prone to sorehocks. Having multiple flooring options -- especially cushiony ones that mimic soft earth -- are a good idea. Depending on what he will or won't chew, some options may be rubber mats, cushioned bath mats or kitchen mats.

As long as he is not on cage wire all the time he should be fine.

I've heard of some rexes getting sore hocks that had been kept on carpet 24/7.

Oh well, I have mini rex and they have wooden places to lay on.

I have a cardboard box and two grass tunnels/beds in his playpen. I recently got him a new dog bed and he destroyed it, so I will have to be very careful about what I use for flooring. I will most likely be using an old sheet or blanket.

I just want to mention how helpful y'all have been! Thanks so much!

I've got a few fireguards last week going to use the panels for playpen and just protecting my cables everywhere in my apartment, so far so good very happy with them, I've got 3 already buy them 2ndhand so pretty cheap and I like that the panels can be put in different ways wherever you need them. Just like this one in picture.
Each fireguard made of two pairs of panels with flexible connection the larger panel 80x66cm and smaller 48x66cm (can be used as a door), and two top panels approximately 80x40cm. In fact, you can even make a cage of the one fireguard size 66x48 and 66cm high just there will be no floor but can easily be pegged if you want to use on backyard.
