Hello,

Keeping in my last incident, i have bought two bunnies, but here in India it's very difficult to get healthy bunny from pet store and they are the main culprit who are responsible for their health. They feed them carrot, ccumber and tomatoe as main food. I was shocked listening to it, but when i asked why don't you people feed them grass, he said from wer should we bring grass, its very difficult to get. So arguing with him was pointless and every pet store people in India are same.

But still i gathered courage and bought those rabbits, as here in India its difficult to get one with healthy diet. Store people treat them as commodity and not a living creature.

When bought one of them was doing runny poping, i prayed to god whole night as the store person don't know what all they gave him to eat.

I had ordered Meadow Hay of Chipsy from Amazon India, so i feeded them. This time i won't introduce them to Veggies so early, as guided by many members.

So please tell me apart from this what all diet should i maintain. Right now i am only giving them 24/7 Meadow Hay.

Please guide, so that they stays with me for very very very long and healthy.

Also one of the rabbit doesn't drink water from bowl, while other drinks frequently while eating hay. So how to treat that one?

How much amount of hay should i provide both of them? I can see they are eating frequently after few minutes of rest.

They should have free access to hay and a little pellets to help them grow. But if they aren’t used with pellets it’s something that will have to be introduced slowly.

Make sure to keep an eye on their droppings and feel their stomach. So you know the diet works for them and they don’t have any trouble. Kits are really sensitive.

Droppings can tell if they eat well, gas in the stomach, get too much sugar and so on. Which can really help you see if something is wrong with your rabbit. Because rabbits are so quiet pets which makes it hard to see when they feel bad.

Can think how it is in other countries about rabbits, my mother friends was surprised when she found out my rabbits where over 1 year old. Because in my moms homeland rabbits often don’t live longer than a year.

Rabbits are really a misunderstood pet.

I hope everything’s goes well with your babies.

How were they drinking water in the actual store ? The second bunny might not be drinking water from the bowl because they aren’t used to it- one of my bunnies would never have touched a bowl whereas the others preferred it. Although personally I don’t use bottles maybe you could look into getting one of them aswell as the bowl so they have two options to drink out of, although it’s disputed that bottles don’t let out enough water for the bunnies, it is atleast better than the bunny drinking nothing at all.

They had bowl.

If the meadow hay is good quality and no toxic weeds or mold in it, then you can just feed the meadow hay. Make sure they have enough hay to last the whole day, then give them fresh hay each day. They should never run out of hay.

If you don't have a reliable good quality rabbit food pellet available to you, then you would be better off not feeding pellets as poor quality pellets can actually be very harmful to rabbits.

If you can get a salt lick you should provide that as well as rabbits need a small amount of sodium in their diet.

You will need to keep a close eye on the bunny that is not drinking to make sure he starts drinking. If he hasn't started drinking by now, try showing him the bowl of water. If the other rabbit is drinking, that is a good time to show him as he will see the other rabbit and can learn how to drink if he doesn't understand how. If he still won't drink, then you may need to syringe him some water, but it needs to be done very carefully so he doesn't breath it into his lungs. It should be done slowly, just a little bit, just enough for him to swallow. If he's not making a chewing motion with his mouth and swallowing, stop immediately. Then as a last resort to get fluids into him you could give him one of the veggies he's used to like the cucumber or carrot. But if he hasn't had anything to drink since you first posted, you need to get fluids in him immediately, even if you have to take him to a vet to do it. Just make sure the vet is an experienced rabbit vet.

Now she is drinking water, once more thing i have bought this meadow hay from amazon and here is the link https://www.amazon.in/dp/B07N7K6F3S/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20

I have given this hay to them 24x7, so now should i give them some other thing. I don't think i should start veggies so early as they are too young and i want to be safe too.

I would maybe take them to the closest rabbit-savvy vet so they can get a general check up to make sure everything is in order. They’re still young, if they are only 45 days old then they shouldn’t really have been sold to you as they should still be with their mother until they are around 8 weeks old. I would try to very slowly introduce pellets to their diet in the up and coming days as well as taking them to the vet. Good luck with them both :)

One of the rabbit passed away, this is very strange and stressful. I don't know what's happening with them. She was active throughout the day, and today evening i saw her separate very down and took her out of cage. She was unable to walk properly, then situation become more worst and she passed away.

I am totally clueless, what happening. This is second time now. Now i think its usual with these white rabbit which are treated badly by store people.

You need to take the other rabbit to the vet immediately. And is there a way that you could report the store you bought them from? This should not be happening, how is the other rabbit?

Those people are too much egoistic, they don't hell care. These animals are just an commodity for them, they are only interested in sale.

Good that you people have lot of sources to buy Rabbits and also ur pet store and farm or breeders take lot of care of them.

Second one also passed away in same manner. With this i am done, i don't know whats going on. I gave them only hay and fresh water that's it.

Is there any authority that you could report them to? Like a regulations board or animal welfare? I’m so sorry for your loss it must have been heartbreaking for you. :(

I'm from India too, I don't know where specifically you are in India but certain cities have their own wildlife/nature /animal clubs/rescues/organisations

Gather proof of the pet shops animal abuse, go there and secretly record the conditions the animals are kept in, while talking to the seller there about your rabbits dying so fast and have him repeat everything he said to you earlier about improper diet and care earlier when you first bought the rabbits. Also try to find out from him which breeder did he purchase from. The breeder could also be partly responsible (he is already for separating baby rabbits from their mother before their weaning period of 2-3 months is over) but also he could be keeping the mother/parent bunnies in poor conditions as well as repeated inbreeding or any other harsh conditions leading to genetic/developmental /health problems and death in your case. Also ask about the other animals there, if he is mistreating the rabbits he is bound to be mistreating the other animals in his shop as well. And make sure you do all this while secretly recording in video, more proof of more animals being abused at his shop will be a bigger case against him. I will link the following video that has all the steps to report a pet shop and although the country and legislation are a little different in the video it should give you an idea as to how to compile evidence and report to authorities. I wish you good luck and may justice be delivered to your dead bunnies (and other animals from the shop that may have died before them) along with the other bunnies and animals there that are still kept in improper conditions!

But they are not wild but farm rabbits.

Whereabouts in India are you from? I’m sure with a quick google search you’ll be able to find some form of organisation. And by filming the conditions & writing down your personal experience and recording the owner (as softcottoncloud suggested) you’ll be able to prevent this in the future from happening to other rabbits. Please, if you are thinking of getting another bunny rescue or buy it from responsible places, buying bunnies from places like this just profits the owners and therefore makes them able to treat more bunnies poorly.
