I have an indoor bunny and just received a new diffuser and oils (orange, eucalyptus and lavender) for Christmas. I have only diffused orange so far and it was very diluted. Is this harmful to my bunny? Any thoughts or knowledge is much appreciated!

Hello,

I also have a diffuser at my home, but i dont use it in front of Teddy, I use it down stairs. Essential oils are not good for any small pet. Rabbits have very sensitive respritory systems and G.I tracts. Things like scented bedding and air fresheners are not good for your rabbit. If you could use it in a room the bunbun is not in, it should be just fine

I know nothing of essential oils (never used them or dealt with them), but from a chemistry perspective, I would be concerned that they contain residual solvents and other chemicals.

Because these oils are not food or drugs, they don't have to conform to FDA standards -- that includes the FDA's strict ingredient labelling requirements. Sellers of these products aren't required to disclose or test for what's actually in them (or potential chemicals in them carried over from the manufacturing/extraction process of the oils).

I wouldn't recommend using it in the same room (or enclosed space) as a rabbit or other pet, but otherwise I wouldn't expect it to cause harm to companion animals. However, if the rabbit exhibits any change in behavior or temperament, I would reconsider the oil's use in the house.

That's helpful, thank you!

I wouldn't even use that stuff around humans. "essential oils" is a nice name for small molecule chemicals nobody evere tested for what they do in bodys and cells, I can't stand strong scents (even have to flee shops like ikea), for me that is nothing but air pollution.

Humans evolved to tolerate polluted air, we can stomach some stuff in smoke a thousend times better than animals, so I guess what we think is a "nice" scent is pretty heavy for them.

Good points, thank you!
