hey guys !

we got a 9.5 weeks old bunny recently. He was eating burgess excel and was giving him mushy poop. I stopped his pellets and started only giving him hay for 5 days... I notice that he was dropping a lot of weight so last night started him on Sherwood. I gave him only 3 pieces of pellets. This morning I woke up to lots of mushy poo...I was wondering if its mushy night poo or if this is diarrhea... and if anyone can pls give me some additional advice.. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks !

For growth you need to give alfalfa til 6 months--higher protein and calcium. Also give him regular hay and a small amount of pellets a couple times a day. We use timothy pellets.

We had to stop his pellets for a few days because his poop was mushy. I started him back on pellets last night with only 3 pellets of the new food Sherwood brand. The mushy poop started again. Does the pics attached look like diarrhea or night time poop but very mush ?

I took her to a small animal vet last night. The Vet suspect coccidia and now brownie is on antibiotic. He is active, eating and drinking well so the vet was happy about that. Today I will bring back a fecal sample and they will test for parasites etc. Thank you for your reply !

dear browniefuzzylop,--this was my fear,i wished I was wrong each time I read these threads/posts..--let me guess {baytryl},-poop test--,your dvm is on it..-while on antibiotic, you must introduce probiotics,{buy from a farm animal supply store} -or-maybe pet smart??--because the gi tract flora is going to be disrupted-it gets wipped out,and must be rebuilt..rabbits are strictly herbivours,diet={70%,grasses}-ie timothy,/orchard,-water,-quality pellets, some treats..must watch the poops,-you now recongnize good poops from bad poops-watch for the good stuff, and cecotropes..sorry to carry on but I have been at this for years, and these fury critters are still teaching me..--I hope your dvm will help you about all this ,,sounds like a good one!--sincerely james waller for joseph r cottontail/bdenium-rip-because of her age, please ask dvm about diet

I bought some Bene Bac gel Plus.. I will be starting him on it asap. I really appreciate your reminder about Probiotic!

Since your baby was losing weight, did your vet recommend Critical Care (Oxbow)? We had one baby in a litter who started losing weight at about 6 weeks. We did 3cc Critical Care for 2 weeks, 4 times a day. Never thought I'd be doing 2 am feedings again! He's now at 10 weeks and is a round little bun. We're slowly weening him off the Critical Care. I know this stuff saved him. Shared the story in case you need to hand feed your little one.

Hi CathyO, I mentioned the losing weight to the vet... she said that I dont need to worry about Brownie since he still have lots of muscle and is not wasted away. She feels that at the moment if I up his pallets he should start gaining the weight. She told me to keep a close eye on him .. should he start getting worst, to bring him back if anything asap ! If Brownie gets worst ... I will mention critical care to the vet.
He is on day 2.5 of antibiotic.... and I have started feeding him Sherwood pellets again.. slowly increasing to the right amount.

Thank you for your advice regarding critical care I'm glad your baby bunny is now doing much better !

Baytril does not treat coccidia. If your rabbit does in fact have coccidia, you were given the correct medication to treat it.

Hes been on the meds for 2 and a half day.... I have not been able to collect any of the mushy poo. which is good and bad since I cant confirm if he does in fact have coccidia.
But today I notice his poop look like this.... not quite as round and also pretty moist ... is this normal ?

I think I jinxed myself.... right after the strange shaped poo... the mushy poo came back. I was able to collect a sample and bring to the vet. I guess now it's a waiting game to see the result.

It could just be your rabbit is sensitive to an ingredient in any type of pellet. You might want to consider trying a pellet free diet for a few weeks to see if it resolves the problem. It's what I would try anyways. If you are concerned about weight loss, adding in some alfalfa hay can help as it's higher in protein. I would start with a small amount and gradually increase to make sure it doesn't cause any digestive issues. Also make sure to provide a salt lick.

dear browniefuzzylop,-your picture indicates {Bactrim}--sorry I mentioned baytril-my error,--did the fecal test come back positive for protozoal enteritis-"coccidiosis"--?-sincerely james waller

No words from vet yet. I know they test in house lab.. and they were super busy yesterday. I will give them a little more time and I'll call them if I dont hear back. I'm so curious as well for the results
