My bunny Oreo is a 4 1/2 month old holland lop. We have had him for almost 2 months. He lives in a 3 level bunny condo with an xpen attached. The condo is always open to the xpen. He doesn’t chew the wood of the condo a lot, but he loves chewing on any carpet or flooring I try to put in the xpen. The current carpet is on top of foam mats on top of my living room hardwood floor. I need something on top of the hardwood because I don’t want him to slip or not be able to move comfortably in his “home”. He started chewing the foam so I have to have something over it.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what I can put on top of the foam mats that he either won’t chew or at least is bunny safe if he does chew it.

I used a roll of linoleum, quite comfy and also keeps cool, and difficult to chew or damage.

Use a basic flat sheet if you have to, Twin size works best for me, I use puzzle mats over the carpet, replacement crate mat for dog kennel where his litter box & water dish goes, then a waterproof bed pad and a sheet over top. The rest of his pen has memory foam mats wrapped in fleece, but under his food/litter/water area I like to keep it as waterproof as I can. It makes cleaning his pen (changing the bedsheet) so much easier, as no towels underneath get wet since the waterproof bed pad soaks up any accidents (which rarely happen). Sometimes he digs at the bed sheet in his favorite "spot" where he likes to lay at night, but the sheet is pulled tight and clipped to the puzzle mat, so its not bunched up anywhere and doesnt give him anything to dig at.. And he never eats any type of fabric. If he bites it, its only because its "in his way", he never tries to actually ingest it. This works well for us

Thank you all for your suggestions. I am going to try the bedsheet idea first, seeing I am worried he will eat the fleece and it is still quite warm!! Thank you again!

So I have a special needs bunny and flooring was always a huge issue for her. She has three legs and a nub. Even carpet was too rough for her nub and she would lose fur from the friction. I got some of that no slip stuff people use to line their cabinets and put a puppy whelping pad on top. Just a generic brown one from Amazon, I have several in different sizes for switching out during washing. It absorbs any spills or accidents and is machine washable. Nothing transfers through it. It’s soft enough that her nub has full fur coverage. For extra softness and comfy factor I put in a shower mat, the kind that is made of those little “fingers” maybe microfiber? or something. It looks like a giant soft scrubber or shammy. She would do fine without the nonslip rubber webbing under the mat, but she is a Rex anyway, so I worry about her hocks so any extra softness is thumbs up.

I forgot to add. The whelping pad is resistant to digging and chewing. It is firm enough so it lays flat and I just put the sides of the playpen inside the edges so she can’t chew the sides of it up. I did try towels and sheets but she was able to chew them and one morning I found her tangled in the holes with her one good back leg completely stuck. I swore off anything like that after that. If her circulation was cut any longer she may have lost her remaining back leg and quality of life would have to be considered... but those are just my experiences and opinions! All buns are different!
