Hey~lo everybody,
Looking for info on my bunnies sniffles and sneezing...I thought maybe I heard her sneeze yesterday but never heard the noise again and did not note any discharge whatsoever. Now today, she sneezed a good three times!! She also has a small amount of clear and white discharge from her tiny nose, much like a runny nose. Does anyone know if there is a DIY treatment for my bunnies sniffles and sneezes??? And can she(Rebel Monkey) be contagious to my second bunny(Louie)? I just brought Rebel back home over the weekend after making the renovations I wanted on my new hutch to make it much bigger, a second level and comfortable for two...I have set up a play room in the basement where they are able to exercise and binky about and also where I am able enjoy time with them daily...could it be dust from the basement? Or maybe an allergy to my pups? They love to watch us play from the other side of the gated fence. She is only going on 4 months! How concerned should I be?? Is this something I should be very concerned about and warrant a visit to the vet? Or is there an at-home-remedy I could possibly try first? Any feedback will be GREATLY appreciated!! Thank you, Mere

hi there!

please bring it to the vet immediately. my sweet english lop girl got the sniffles out of nowhere and even with my vet's very expensive assistance she was dead within a week. Yes they can be contagious!!!!

Good luck and keep us posted.

The rule of thumb is that clear discharge is nothing to worry about, but anything other than clear - including milky or white - is a sign of infection. Infection needs a vet -- there are no home treatments. The vet needs to prescribe appropriate antibiotics.

With rabbits, it is very important to begin treatment as soon as possible. Waiting only decreases the chance of recovery. It is never a good idea to "wait it out" with a rabbit. This would not be comparable to a human cold that just runs it course. It is an infection and needs medical treatment.

THANK YOU so much for your replies! I wasn’t able to get your replies Thursday night through Friday evening due to issues with my iPhone *ggrrr* but I believe I have discovered the issue! I quarantined my bun~buns and did a little research. I came to the realization that the hutch I purchased and renovated was actually a chicken coop and made from cedar *sigh* I sure wish I had done a little research about safe wood to use for a hutch(feeling like such an ametuer). Rebel is back to normal with no discharge or sneezing!! When I quarantined her, the symptoms stopped immediately! Or at least appears to have. Louie remains unaffected. Thank the Good Lord! However, as I am so attached to my wee lil bun~buns already, should I keep Rebel quarantined and still bring her to the vet on Monday if she isn’t displaying any more symptoms? Can a sickness camouflage itself or go dormant, is my question...
Again, thank you, Thank You so sincerely for your responses!
Mere
