Hi, so I just signed up to this wonderful place. I got -rescued- my little bunny, Cloudy, 40 days ago on a rainy cloudy day after university and he was pretty young -I'm still unsure of the sex, but let's go with he-.
And everything has been beautiful rainbows as this is the first mammal I ever get to enter my home.
Already litter trained and is the most caring affectionate pet I've ever dealt with.

But yesterday I discovered this thing on the outside base of his right ear..

I don't know if it's a scar he caused to himself while scratching his ears, or a bug bite -which I suspect- or scab or whatever.. I'm new to this and I'm genuinely worried although he's still healthy and normal.. I asked around and people said I should cleanse the spot with some povidone but I'm still not sure.. And I'm worried about taking him to the vet cause where I live people don't care for rabbits and only focus on cats and dogs so I'm afraid the vet is not exactly qualified to look at my bunbun.. Do you guys know what this spot is and whether or not it's serious for the health of my rabbit and us humans?

Unfortunately it is very difficult to tell from a photo - it won’t hurt to bathe it with salt water, if that makes you feel better, but I really would take him to a vet to be sure. Where do you live? There are some resources to help find rabbit savvy vets near you, if you are in the UK there is a list on the rwaf website. Even basic Vets will be able to tell if it is an abscess/bug bite/old scar etc, so you’d be better off seeing them than nobody at all. We can speculate about what it is but that’s the only way to know for sure :)

It looks like a sore. It could have gotten scratched on something, or it could even be due to him having ear mites. If it is mites, if you look inside the ear you may see little red bumps or ear debris. Ear mites are treated with either ivermectin or topical Revolution(selamectin).

If it's a scratch, the concern I would have is whether or not it's become infected. In the picture that whole edge of the ear looks like it is red and maybe inflamed. If it is infected then your rabbit will need to be put on a rabbit safe antibiotic like baytril or smz/tmp. But if it just looks like a small scratch with no red inflamed or infected skin, it's possible it could just heal on it's own.

Whether it's ear mites or a sore, to me based on looking at the picture, it looks like it's progressed to the point where it will require seeing a rabbit savvy vet, to help get it properly diagnosed and treated.

Thank you for replying, I really appreciate it. No, unfortunately I'm not from the states nor UK, I'm from Iraq, where such cute little things are hardly cared for and usually mistreated. I lost my two cute little budgies because there are no avian veterinarians who would care .. Excuse? "It's a cheap bird, just buy another one." And this bunny was also a cheap one, a 5$ kind of cheap, stuck with like 10 other small bunnies and hamsters and guinea pigs in a small bird's cage on wired bottom.. I wished to buy all of them.

So I really can't trust a vet with Cloudy, all they care about are those expensive dogs and cats.

I did a lot of research before getting my bunny, it's definitely not ear mites, there is no foul smell, and it's on the outside, the inside is very clean and odorless and smooth. How could he even get ear mites? He lives in my bedroom. But what I noticed the couple past nights that there are fleas in my bedroom, which also bit me and gave me a few pimples so I'm worried they bit him, I cleaned my bedroom thoroughly today and took Cloudy out to spray some bug spray and waited until the scent was gone before going back in with Cloudy.

If I wasn't thoroughly checking Cloudy -like I do every day-, I wouldn't have even seen it. It's very small, not very bumpy and is well hidden in the fur, I had to move it away to see it. And I think him scratching on it makes it look worse.

Though, yesterday it was redder, and assuming it was a pimple, I did to it what I do to my pimples and just applied some cold using a frozen water bottle and it seemed to flatten down and pale down, if that helps to give as information.

Sorry for saying a lot.

That’s a shame you’re facing veterinary care like that :( at the end of the day it is your pet and your money so they should be able to do the same as they do for cats and dogs.
All I can suggest then is leaving it to dry out and hopefully heal - if it gets very red and hot like @JBun says, then it will need antibiotics, which will unfortunately require a veterinary prescription. I’m sorry I can’t tell you much from a photo, and neither would any vet, it’s all just speculation. Keep an eye on it and if it gets any worse please take it to a vet, who will be able to at least prescribe something, or even somewhere like a rabbit rescue who could look at it in the flesh and give some advice. Best of luck let us know if it gets any better :)

Thank you so much for your concern, I just checked it, it's drying out and is pale, definitely not as sore or as red as it was yesterday. There's a group on facebook that rescues cats and such managed by a vet who recommended using that Povidone to disinfect the area in case there was some bacteria but I don't know whether I should apply it or just wait and see if it goes away on its own.

If it isn’t an open wound anymore and is drying up, there wouldn’t be much benefit in using povidone and potentially irritating the healthy healing skin. If it is still open and wet, you can try povidone or even just salt water (I prefer salt water personally) to keep it clean until it closes up.

Actually, it was dry and stuff until earlier where I noticed that the dried bit popped -just like a pimple but no pus- and a small dot of blood was there so I had to use it to disinfect it after contacting a vet -who specifies in cats and dogs, unfortunately-but he assured me it was nothing serious and to just disinfect it. I'm slightly relieved that it's not some sort of mite and such cause I don't think that would bleed or become sore. Probably just a nasty bug bite gone wrong due him scratching it.
