I honestly cannot believe this is happening!
I posted a few months ago because my boy broke his hind leg. We were lucky enough to have great family and friends to help us out financially to get an amputation, and he did great! Just started getting comfortable navigating on tile, using his new litter pan, overall adjusting very well.

Tuesday night, I'm doing dishes and hear a crash. I run out, he's knocked over a skateboard we had leaning in a corner. I do the usual check over, as he's just standing in shock. Then he goes to move... He's just dragging his good back leg, scooting across the floor. PANIC MODE.

I set him up in his hospital cage to restrict movement, called my partner who was at a movie, of course, and waited. When my partner got home, we wanted to see if he was going to try to use his leg, so we let him out for a minute. He used it, but it was definitely uncomfortable and weird. Back in the cage he goes.

I call the vet who did his surgery first thing Wednesday morning, she is so sympathetic. Meanwhile, I feel like the worst mum in the world. She said the fact that he's willing to put weight on it is a good sign, and prescribed some pain meds for the next five days.

It's Friday morning now, he hasn't been out of his cage since Tuesday, other than being held to clean his cage. He's been using his leg to move around the small cage, is very active, is eating pooping, cleaning. He comes right to the cage, wants out. So, this morning, I put him on some carpet, he stretched it out, did a slow lap, then just lied down in his normal spot. I cleaned his cage, and put him back in.

I'm just at a loss here. This is such a new situation. I'm not sure how to tell if he's using his leg because it's starting to feel better or if he's using it because it's the only hind leg he has. The vet seemed to want to just wait this out because he's definitely still delicate from the weeks of vets visits from his surgery, and doesn't want to stress him out too much.

Any advice or good vibes are much appreciated. I feel like I'm having deja vu!

What a nightmare! It sounds pretty promising that he is bright and alert and wanting to run around - if it was really bad he would just choose not to go anywhere. It may well just be a strain or muscle injury of some sort, don’t panic yet! Let him rest it and get some gentle exercise in if he wants to. Your vet sounds pretty on the ball.
Good luck and keep us updated!!

After typing this all up, I went out to see him stretched out, which I'm going to take as a good sign. I feel like he wouldn't be lying spread eagle if we were dealing with something more than a muscle injury/sprain.
I think his foot looks a little swollen, but don't have the other one to compare it to...

Yeah he looks pretty relaxed! He clearly isn’t in too much pain, and he can put weight on it which is a good sign. It is hard to judge swelling, you can’t see if it feels hot as well? But if there is muscle/tendon injury there will be some swelling so don’t worry too much. When will you be seeing the vet again? :)

I should be seeing the vet Tuesday or Wednesday, right after his pain meds run out!

Hopefully by then he’ll be showing some improvement then :)

Sorry to hear about your baby. If worse come to worse you can get a wheel chair made for him. http://www.dogstogo.net/ These guys made one for my big girl when she was suffering rear leg weakness and had trouble keeping her back end up. Good luck and I hope all turns out well.

Sending prayers for you and bunny. Everyone makes mistakes from time to time, no matter how hard we try to make everything safe and good. Don't beat yourself up, it was an accident. I am sooo sorry and I hope he recovers quickly.

Need to set up boundaries so he can only go where it is safe. Ours were able to roam the kitchen and family room only.

He does, he is also only allowed in the family room and kitchen (although we have tile so we really avoids that since his amputation) as well!

A little update:
He seems to be doing well. I opened his hospital cage then turned to grab a treat for him and he had hopped out, on to tile, the other night! He probably only took a hop or two, so I'm hopeful, but still going to keep in his movements restricted until his vet appointment, which I'm making today for tomorrow or Wednesday. I know I won't feel better until he's looked at, fingers crossed!

Have my fingers crossed for you too, let us know what they say!

Hootie has his appointment tomorrow.

I took him out today... Still limping/slightly dragging/not using it right. I'm honestly really worried... But we'll see.

I know I have a good vet who I know offers some payments plans. I've talked to my partner, and we decided that if it's in fact broken, we're going to repair. Hootie has always been an active boy, and I think a few months of recovery will be better in the long run than a wheelchair.

It's up in the air, obviously, but he is older. We're not sure on an exact age, but he's probably 6 or 7, best guess, and it was detected that he had a small heart murmur for his last surgery. But he did great, according to our vet and their team.

This is a surreal experience and my anxiety is through the roof, but having a community to post to is really helpful!

Still don’t panic! It’s only been just over a week? So any soft tissue injuries could still be sore, it isn’t necessarily broken.
Definitely just listen to the advice of your vet, but if they can fix it that would be great news:) don’t feel too badly about a wheelchair if that is necessary as you’d be surprised how quickly they can get around like that! And he doesn’t sound too old, Just middle aged, so that shouldn’t affect your decision too much :) the fact he had a successful surgery before is a great sign.
I can imagine how stressed you must be, I’d be exactly the same, but let’s hope for the best, and I really hope you get some good news!! All my love to Hootie xx

We just got back from the vet! Just a bad sprain in his toes, he's 99.9% sure. He said he's not really even that sensitive to him touching it, which almost certainly rules out a break. He sent us home with another week of pain meds, and we'll keep him in his recovery cage until the last dose.
They said if after the pain meds run out he's still not using it totally right, come back and they'll get some x-rays done. But the vet seemed very hopeful, and said, "I'm really not worried about him at all." As he watched him hop around the exam room (tile, even!).
Definitely feeling better, phew!

He even checked out his new stump, and he said that it healed BEAUTIFULLY. He doesn't seem to be trying to use the stump to do anything, which is good, and his other leg felt very strong and healthy, other than the toe issue, and is adjusting the the weight distribution nicely. So just an overall good day for our little man!

Yay that’s brilliant news!! I bet you feel so relieved! And great news that the amputation has healed so well - fingers crossed for a quick recovery for the little dude so he can get back to causing mischief on those three legs!!!
