I have had a bunny in the past and she did not smell. I just recently recieved another bunny and he smells. How do I prevent him from smelling?

I just got him, so he is still not used to his new environment. Does he smell because he is too stressed to groom himself properly?

The previous owner says that the bunny was neutered.

He doesnt smell terrible. but specifically on the top of his head, he is a little stinky. Is there anything I can do to make him want to groom himself?

Try cleaning out his scent glands. Some rabbits do not clean those out by themselves and often the males will be very musky after a while. I clean my male rabbit's scent glands out about every 5 or 6 months and he smells fresh and lovely all the time. Use a clean q-tip with a little bit of mineral oil to do it.

He might not be able to reach that part of himself well enough to groom.

My bun didn't smell terrible, he just had a concentrated bunny smell right on top of his head. What I use to do was to get a drop of soap (I used oatmeal pet soap that's safe for bunnies) on a piece of warm damp cloth and give him a wipe down. Then with another warm clean damp cloth, to clean any excess away.

The oatmeal soap was great, because it wasn't toxic to bunnies if he accidentally ingested some.

Another alternative is to buy baby powder made from cornstarch (I used the Johnson's brand). Fluffy your bunny up by standing the fur up (run your hands against the fur) then sprinkle the powder on him (avoid getting it in his eyes), use your hands to make sure the powder gets all the way into his coat (it'll be a nice massage for bun while your at it), then brush him down. The powder should be able to cling to any oily residue and hopefully get rid of it as you brushed the powder out. I use to do this as a dry bath for my bun. And baby powder smells great :)

Lemme know if it helps!

It could also be something to do with his living conditions at his previous home. If he was housed with or near other rabbits he may have been sprayed by other rabbits. If he's neutered he generally shouldn't smell. If it's simply a smell on his fur, it should pass given a bit of time once he sheds his coat.
