Well my 9 1/2 month old lionhead got his man card taken away today. He's still pretty doped up so hasn't moved around much. The vet gave me antibiotics and bitter apple for the incision to keep him from licking. But no pain medication. He is 4.5 pounds. Anyone have suggestions for if he does start hurting? I noticed they didn't give pain medication to any of the animals that went for surgery today.

The paper also says to keep him confined to his cage for 2 weeks and ABSOLUTELY no running or jumping. How do I keep him from running or jumping. He is a rabbit!

It was the same when I had mine done - no pain medication. He was pretty poorly for a day and then started to perk up. Although afterwards I felt very angry they hadn't sent him home with any pain meds and wished I had asked for some. I don't know what pain meds would be suitable, perhaps someone else could suggest some.

Just take out anything in his cage that he could jump on, like second levels or boxes, and don't let him out to run around. If his cage/enclosure is big enough that he can actually run around IN it, then use a pen or something in there to restrict his space. I would actually only keep him confined completely in a small space for 1 week, then let him out a few minutes a day to stretch his legs but not give him anything to jump on.

He should not need extra pain meds, a neuter is not a very serious surgery, but if he is not eating 12 hours after the neuter, then take him back right away. He should be eating very soon and be completely back to normal in a couple days.

Be sure to keep his cage and litterbox extra clean, and check the surgery site daily for any sign of tears or infection.

My vet said that eating and drinking is the most important and said if he wasn't pooping and eating you need to get ox Bow critical care recovery food in him, my rabbit was six years old so the surgery was more risky, but there is one thing he did not tell us was not to put him with a female rabbit for thirty to sixty days because they can still have spearm in their system, thanks vet. If my female is pregnant he is paying for the child support.

The vet told me in the two weeks he's confined all of the sperm will be out of his system. Is this not true? Because I have a 9 week old female that he cannot wait to play with!

I read online not to put them together for three to four weeks after being neutered, but when I posted about my concerns on this message board people said I should of waited thirty to sixty days to allow him to recover from surgery and the sperm issue, so I think it's better to wait than to be sorry with a litter of unwanted rabbits. I'm no expert or vet so that's my two cents.

Thank you to everyone for your feedback! So he is drinking and eating hay but not his food or veggies. He is pooping and using the bathroom like normal. Is this cause for concern?

I had my lil guy man hood taken away also ... and he had pain med(s) application thru a plastic syringe

he was down for like a for about a week ( give or take a few days ), and he slowly started coming around to his old self ...

just give it some time and he ll come back to his old self =0)

and him dropping the black pearl(s), its normal n a good sign

if you didn't see that, now that would be a concern ...
