So I'm thinking of breeding my two teddy lionhead rabbits when they are older and when I get a new cage for them both cause they are growing out of there current one

They came from the same litter so they are both 5 months old they are 6 months in 3 weeks can I breed them if they are from the same litter ?and what age do u recommend breeding them ?

I'm a 100 % clueless about rabbit pregnancies and what to do after she gives birth and nesting boxes

I really need some advise
Thanks
Micaela

Whow I never really consider or even realised all of those things thanks so much for that link .. I think I'll hold back on breeding them

If you're interested in breeding rabbits, I'd recommend visiting www.arba.net for more information. Lionheads just recently were accepted as a recognized breed and are only recognized in certain colors. There should be a link on ARBA's website to take you to the Lionhead specialty club page, where there are likely links to breeders who have been working with them for some time.

Longtime breeders are great mentors in helping you pair rabbits together, teach you about desirable traits and less desirable traits, etc.

Usually, breeding siblings is not recommended. It's not like they will have 18 legs or anything weird, but that kind of cross is VERY close genetically, so you'll often double up on as many bad traits as there are good ones.

Despite what the previous link says about not breeding, there are also many legitimate reasons for breeding. You just have to make sure it's for the right reasons: Improving the breed in type, temperament, health, etc.

Breeding just for pets without a specific, researched focus on those things...well, we have enough people doing that already.

Yeah, it is NOT reccomended to breed littermates. I have a pair from the same litter and we will not be breeding them. also, if they share a cage...........you might have those kits sooner than you realize! My daughters mini rex doe got pregnant at 5 months of age and delivered her kits totally unexpectedly 5 days after she turned 6 months. I had my male neutered about a month before this happened, but apparently it was timed JUST right!

I agree with everything OakRidgeRabbitry said. Definitely find a mentor. Go to shows. Ask questions. Find out what traits are desirable and what traits are not. Find good breeding stock.

Good luck! I've been breeding and showing rabbits for ten years now and it has taught me so many valuable things and I have met so many lovely people. :)
