Hello I am new here. I have two female bunnies Buttons 7yrs and Willow 5yrs. Buttons developed cancer in her left front leg and it was amputated yesterday. Does anyone have any experience with this type of surgery?

Rabbits tend to cope really well - hopefully she'll soon be hoping about so fast you won't be able to tell. The only thing you may have to do is clean her ear on that side (she may manage though as it's a front not back leg) and she might appreciate some extra grooming are the head/ears on that side as she won't be able to do the lick and wash for around her eye/ear flap.

Thank you Tamsin for your encouraging words. She is doing good. Eating her greens, veggies, and pellets and drinking. Still on antibiotics and pain meds. Had to pick up from vet morphine drug because she wasn't eating. It has made her more comfortable so she can eat also an appetite stimulant drug. All have helped very much. The only thing that bothers me is she isn't moving around much. She is in a crate where I can watch her and at night I move it in the bedroom with me. I have wrapped her in a towel since day one of surgery an laid her in her crate by the door so she can reach her water bottle and I feed her foods there. I change the towel regularly because she pees and poops in it. She stays wrapped up. She gets very scared when She can't walk. I have had her on the bed but I hold her up. What should I do. Thanks

I'm sorry your bun is struggling to cope. Hopefully as she gets more used to the change, she won't get so scared. I think probably just continuing to do a bit of physical therapy with her, where you help support her so that she can get used to using one front leg. I have seen some people use a towel slung under the belly, to help support their rabbit and give them a chance to learn to walk around. Maybe that's something that could work for your bun.

Thank you JBun for your suggestions. Just to know she is reacting normally in this situation is helpful. Hopefully when she is healed and getting around I can help others here with my experience. I have been on the other sites you mentioned and they are awesome! Will learn a lot there.
Thanks again!

It will take a bit of time for her to build the extra muscle on her other side, and also I expect she'll be a bit sore and not want to move about too much.

How's she doing today?
