There is a big discussion about this on the Showbunny yahoo group. They are trying to get a survey going to figure out exacting what is going on. It seems to be more in the eastern US. I have not heard about any here on the west coast.

It really depends on the fair and their own rules. You can check with your county extension agent for the rules. Some require you to own the doe, while others allow you to purchase the kits at weaning. At our fair, all blue ribbon pens sell. This year, a girl brought in a pen of unknown...

Good deal. This way you will have a better chance of showable babies. Minilop does have a good point.....it IS possible to find a showable pig in rescues and shelters if you know what you are looking for. That is an option for people who want to show but don't want the problems that come with...
