Is this litter safe?

The equine pellets are great! I use those for my rabbits and they're very absorbent. :)

A friend of mine who has horses told me it's best to stay away from hardwood stove pellets. I can't remember off the top of my head which wood in commonly used in those, but it can cause laminitis in horses and actually poisoned her her herd. It may be black walnut?

She has rabbits too and we're not sure whether the hardwood would have an adverse affect in rabbits. But I'd recommend sticking to the softwood, like pine pellets. Just incase!

I'm not sure what kind of wood is in the hardwood stove pellets, but I know that black walnut is unsafe for most things. Its pretty toxic to animals and will even kill your grass and/or garden, flowers because of the oils in it. Just wanted to share that little tidbit for info.

But I use the pine pellets and I love them! They're so absorbent and they're so good with odor. I change my boxes everyday, but even if I leave it for a few days you still can't smell anything. It does turn into saw dust when wet, so its easy to see whats wet and whats not, so you can scoop! I love it. Beware though, sometimes it does stain feets if the buns walk on really soiled/wet pellets. My solid white bun had a semi-issue with it and I had to get a grate to get her off the litter completely. But my little bun now, with white feets, it doesn't bother her at all and doesn't stain her feet at all. So I guess it just depends on the bun!

Yep, it was the black walnut then! Apparently the hardwoods burn better, which is why they're used for stove pellets. Probably not a big deal if the rabbit doesn't come into contact with them, but I don't know that for sure so I stick with pine. :)
