Hi! My Holland Lop doe, Dusky, has had the sneezes and snotty nose for a couple days. I attached a few pics, one of her nose after she sneezed, and one of her dirty forearms from wiping her nose. She is also pregnant, due on March 14th. I've talked to a vet, and he told me the normal antibiotics he would prescribe are harmful to a pregnant doe. I'm just wondering if anyone has any home remedies or over-the-counter medications I could give her to help. Would appreciate any advice, thank you!

White snot means your rabbit has a bacterial respiratory infection. Can your vet not start her on a different rabbit safe antibitoic, that would be safe for her to have while she's still pregnant? That's what I would ask. If not, then as long as the URI isn't getting worse, you may just have to wait until she has her babies, then get the antibiotic started, presuming it's safe for a nursing rabbit and her kits.

The vet I spoke with was online, and therefore couldn't prescribe anything. I did ask him that, and he said amoxicillin would be okay and would help her. So I'm waiting for my regular vet to open so I can hopefully get in to them and get a prescription for it.
I'm also concerned that it may pass on to her babies. The vet suggested switching them to a different nursing doe(which is an option for me), but will that unnecessarily stress everyone out? If her babies will be exposed regardless, is it worth exposing my other doe plus possibly losing some kits to the stress of change?

And just to reiterate what Blue Eyes said:

Do not give your rabbit amoxicillin. This could cause fatal enterotoxemia. I would also suggest not consulting with a vet online again, that isn't knowledgeable about rabbits. And make sure your regular vet is an experienced rabbit vet.

You really shouldn't be exposing any other rabbits to her and her babies, and the best thing would be to quarantine the mom and babies from all other rabbits, as well as quarantining any other rabbits that have been exposed to her in the last few weeks. You also should be changing clothes and disninfecting yourself after being around her and before being around your other rabbits. If you're a breeder/shower and your rabbit ends up having pasteurella, it could infect your whole rabbitry.

To really be sure, you need to have her tested to determine the bacteria involved. If it is pasteurella, she and her kits and any other rabbits exposed, need to continue to be isolated. Pasteurella can be extremely difficult to completely clear up, but if your vet is able to do this with the right antibiotic, then you really need to make sure she is free of the bacteria before she is allowed to be near other rabbits again.

Interesting, thank you for your warning @Blue eyes and @JBun . I've got an appointment with my regular vet I trust, and I'm sure we'll get this cleared up. Hopefully I'll have some good news soon.

Hi....how are your buns? I hope you were able to get her well before kits arrived. A breeder I bought my rabbit from gives her buns colloidal silver (buy from any herbal store or online)...she swears by it. She gives to mom and kits after birth to prevent eye infections. I just went to visit her last week and all of her litters are doing great!!! She has very healthy rabbits. I know colloidal silver was used in bandages during wwii to prevent wound infections. Just thought I'd pass this along...use or lose info. :)

Thanks for asking! Dusky's doing okay, her symptoms haven't worsened and my vet agreed that it would be best to hold off on treating her until her babies are weaned. She had her babies on the night of Day 35, the longest I've had a doe go! But they're doing well, three little roly polys :)

And thanks for letting me know about the colloidal silver, I'll look into that.

Awwww...they are beautiful 😍. She looks like a proud mama!!! Do you have homes for them already?

I would look up the colloidal silver...my mom used it for herself and it worked well for her. I'm ordering some for my bunny to give after birth. :)

Thank you! I'm quite proud of them myself lol❤ Yep, they're all on hold for our waiting list members right now!
