2 sick bunnies

I have 2 Angora bunnies,Biscuit & Casper, they are brothers 4 years old. Biscuit got a lung infection earlier this year and after daily injections he finally recovered and is doing fine. A couple of weeks ago he contracted an upper respiratory cough and now both Rabbits have the same cough. Medicine doesn't seem to help, so the vet has Biscuit on a daily injection but that is not helping. I really hate to see them suffer but I don't know what else to do! Any suggestions?

I you can find another vet that works on exotics in your area, you can get a second opinion. Maybe you need a vet that can look at the situation through different eyes.

If your rabbits are actually coughing, that is quite serious. Rabbits don't usually cough unless their respiratory system is significantly compromised. Did your vet determine it was an infection(white snot, xrays showing an infection, etc) or could it be a chemical in their environment irritating the respiratory tract? If they are struggling to breath, this could be an emergency where they need oxygen, nebulization, IV meds, and in hospital care.

If it's an infection that isn't to the point of respiratory distress and hospitalization, you could ask your vet about trying azithromycin. I've had good success with it clearing up respiratory and other infections in my rabbits, and it tends to work pretty quickly, if the bacteria involved is sensitive to it.
