Hi everyone, I'm moving soon (renting) and currently my buns have their own bedroom. I don't plan on that changing wherever I go but I would like to find a new solution to protecting the carpet.

In my current place I just have a really low pile carpet that I got from home depot that I threw in their bedroom, and while it did work for protecting the unit carpet, it was a really big pain to cut myself and get it in the apartment, and every once in a while they would find a stray edge and pull it so I wouldn't consider it fully bun proof.

I've always been curious about interlocking tiles because I heard other bun owners use them, but I wonder how easily buns are able to rip the edges of them if they tried, especially if they're foam which seems dangerous. Are there any firmer options that people have found to work really well for buns? Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hello,
I use the gym flooring foam mats for my rabbits enclosure and they work out really well. They are dark grey and have raised bumps that really help with traction too. The only issue I had with them is when pellets fell between two mats my rabbit bit out chunks of foam to get at them. He didnt seem to ingest it or at least too much that caused an issue, so I recommend those!

I have puzzle mats for Theo and they are amazing! I chose them because it helps prevent sore hocks which is essential for my mini rex. They are super easy to clean! Theo does not chew them, but some rabbits will. If your rabbits do decide to chew the mats, you will need to remove them to be safe.
Here are the mats that I got: CAP Barbell Equipment Mat 12-Piece Puzzle Mat (12 X 12 X 1/2-Inch), Black - Walmart.com.

Another flooring option would be tiles but you would have to cover them with a rug so that your rabbits can grip the floor, and so that the tiles don't hurt their feet.

Thanks for the link! These look sturdy and perfect. Perhaps I'll get a trial square to see what they do with it, I wonder if getting these + some Foss rugs over it for added chew protection would be overkill

Lol that pellet scenario would definitely happen with mine, one of my rabbits one time jumped on his plate of pellets sending them flying everywhere and a couple got stuck in the heat registers and I had to calm him down and get him to stop pawing at the heaters while I used toothpicks to get them out. Whatta drama queen.

These look great though, I might decide to cover it with their blankets for some added protection. Thanks!

They aren’t great for sore hocks! @Mariam+Theo my buns sore Hocks completely healed and are growing fur back. Foam mats are great my girl bun did not bother chewing them but when I brought home my boy bun he destroyed them •_• good thing he has his own area for know. When bonded I’ll cover them up

Just be careful.... I used the interlocking mats because one bun got sore hocks. All was good for about 2 months. Then one morning I went into pen and the buns had chewed and chewed on them... They have a ton of free hay, leafy veggies, and pellets.. so it was not hunger. Shortly after this, my girl got stasis. Vet thinks possibly she swallowed some of the mat.
I still use them, but they are all now wrapped in blankets and then covered by another big blanket.

Yeah one of my buns is a chewer so I think I've decided that while mats might be a good base, for my buns I might need to put some sort of rug down or something to keep a layer between them and the mats

Just make sure they cannot burrow under the rug or blanket and get to mats.. That's what mine did. Clever little buns :)

I loved my foam mats but my bunnies never stopped chewing them, I was so disappointed if it wasn’t for that they would have been a great flooring. I eventually gave up with them and replaced with a couple of rugs to cover the area and they never chewed those at all.

I used them to start out with first but soon realised that my rabbits were chewing on them so we put down plastic then the tiles and then we put an indoor ourdoor carpet over top he have had no problems with anything leaking threw and they don't chew on it so far we have done that for the past 1.5 years we just replace the indoor out door carpet about every 6 months.

I use utility mats from Menards. They work great, but when they are new, they stink like rubber. I put mine in the garage for a couple of months to off gas before using them.

This is actually what we went with exactly! very durable, I hope it works out in the long run and you're right about the smell. the buns haven't moved into their new room yet so we keep the windows open there when we can to air it out and over the last few weeks it seems to have helped. hope they like their new room when they move into it this week 😬
