I have always had Flemish Giants. Just one at a time. Recently lost my Angus - he was 10 years old. Wonderful bunny. So Flemish Giants are all I know. Angus was 26 lbs. The female I had before him was 22 lbs. I was thinking I might try another breed, and one not so giant, but I don't want a mini rabbit. Would anyone have any suggestions about a friendly rabbit I can also take to 4H meetings, etc. I was thinking Lion head or Dutch, but really don't know enough about the breed. All opinions are welcome

Lionheads are small breeds but dutch are normal size with a cute tuxedo markings ☺️

I have heard many say dutch rabbits are a lovely breed and really docile. But it all come to personality. Maybe if you have any shelter where you can meet bunnies and pick one that clicks with you and seem to be what you want in a bunny.

If you are looking for a friendly mid-size breed that usually does well in 4H you might want to check out mini lops & havana.
Himalayans and dutch are very friendly as well, but they are on the small side.
Lionheads are a dwarf breed, smaller than holland lops, so if you didn't want a 'mini' rabbit they're probably not right for you.

Thank you. I called Nebraska Humane Society and they currently have no rabbits. But it’s still a great idea. I’ll wait a bit and try again

I’ll give them a look. I am a leader in 4H and it’s always nice to show kids how friendly they are if they’re interested in them. Angus was great at that but really heavy to carry in a carrier. A friend has mini Rex rabbits but they seemed so tiny. Almost afraid they would break lol. Thank you so much for the advice. Having Flemish for 30 years has left me pretty ignorant about other rabbit breeds

My first rabbit was a mini lop and she was a gem. Super polite, friendly, and a wonderful size (about 6 lbs). She was a great rabbit around kids and enjoyed being taken on little adventures!

Off topic, but will ask just if case you can answer.

We welcomed an unwanted FG into our home in Dec. 2018. Our guy came from a backyard breeder; not a pleasant environment. His head isn't as broad or full as other rescue FG's we helped. His face is narrow.

Qs: How long did each of your Flemmies live? Spayed and neutered, or not? Would you say they mellowed more as they became seniors. Our guy is finally learning to trust and is affectionate, however larger to pick-up and cuddle.

Buns that came through rescue: Rex, mini rex, tan, dutch, american, harlequin, sable, jersey wooley, mini lop, NZW, thriatra, netherland dwarf, hotot, black otter, checkered giant, english spot ...

a Mixed-breed human myself,

Thank you so much. I just met one for the first time this weekend and she was amazingly sweet. Do they ever have issues with their ears? Like yeast infections, etc.

a Mixed-breed human myself,
Honestly, they get more affectionate the older they get. All of mine were neutered between the age of 6 months to a year. All of them lived to over the age of 10, but none made it to 11. I will say they do not like to be picked up, but they will jump up on the couch with you and sit half on your lap. All of mine liked the company of cats and dogs. And they all free roamed the house. All of the females I had were very protective of their cage or in reality it was a Labrador dog crate that they used. But I will say that they can be very dog like. They will come when you call them. You can take them out on a leash. Angus used to play with my Australian Shepherd.

Will second the mini lop suggestion. I owned two mini lops that were so sweet, but had their own little quirks as well. Both of them were registered as therapy animals and I brought them to hospitals, schools, and domestic violence shelters to be with the kids and everyone just adored them.

I never had an issue with yeast infections, but I know that can be a concern. Most of my other past rabbits were lop mixes too (as well as my girl Willa), and I've been very lucky on health, although that can be a concern!

Good to know. Just want to be well informed. I think mini lop is the way to go. Thank you!
