Hello, I hope everyone’s having a great week. I have been using the Kaytee wood pellets for my little Ella and I don’t know what type of what is in it but I heard that we should not be using any pine for the shavings. May I ask what everyone is using for their litter box?

Marth 40 lb bedding pellets sold at Fleet Farm work well and only cost about $6.50. I am sure they are similar to the wood pelleted cat litter. Wood stove fuel pellets also work and as long as they do not contain an accelerant. I have never found any that do contain accelerants, but I always check anyway. I buy them at Menards.

Pine pellets are ok just not pine shavings. Pine pellets are kiln dried which makes it safe. I agree with going with a big bag from your local farm store. I buy mine at Rural King for $6. Its a lot cheaper.

There are some pine shavings that are kiln-dried, like "Living World Pine Shavings " small animal bedding, but it is important to check pine shavings before buying because not all of them are kiln-dried.

@Niomi
I know there is but they are few and far between to find. I have never actually found any. I'm not sure how much the kiln-pine shavings are but I think the pellets are really cheap.

I use unscented kitty litter..So easy to just scoop out the clumps. And doesn't smell

Is it a "clumping" cat litter? Not sure if that is what you meant but wondered since you used the word "clump." If so, those are not considered safe for rabbits.

There are a number of "kitty litter" types that are not safe for rabbits.

Yes it's clumping. I've never been told that. Why isn't it safe?

Clumping can get in the rabbit's digestive system and cause blockage (clump in their gut). Clumping litters also tend to be dusty which is not good for them to be breathing in.
Here's a couple sources that show what other kitty litters are not safe for rabbits...

Thankyou, I had no idea...
I will try and find an alternative filler. Thanks for the info, really appreciate it

Kiln dried pine from walmart--4.0 cubic foot bale. The kiln drying removes the phenols from the pine but avoid cedar as it is totally unsafe. We also hand shred newspaper and put in some pans as they love to play in it.
What about what's in my paper shredder??? Ink on paper is safe?

Photo quality is on plastic so it's a no go. Regular newspaper uses vegetable ink, so its safe. Depends on what the ink is made from. We've used the kiln dried pine for 20 years now with no problem other than needing a good vacuum to clean up the scatterings.

I just found a bag of pine shavings that's kiln dried, I'm going to use that for now until I get to town and buy other stuff. Thought the paper from the paper shredder would be ok. There's no plastic in it.

I stick to wood stove pellets covered with wasted hay, works great, and rather cheap, ca. 12-15€ per year for 2 10lbs rabbits.
