I just went to feed my bunny and found that she had 6 kits. They all died. She didn’t even pull fur for a nest! Will she always be a bad mom or is it just cause it is her first time. I’m afraid to breed her again. Any suggestions?
Is it cold where you are at or strong winds? Do they look deformed? I usually go on the 3 strike rule. You can rebreed today or tomorrow. Some times that happens with first-time moms. Did you have a nest ready? Are there any more rabbits around or next to her?
I'm so sad none of those innocent babies survived. Did you not know that she was pregnant? Is she in a stressful environment? Would she have coccidiosis? Has she been seen by a rabbit-savvy DVM?
She was moved by day 10 so she had enough time to check her surroundings. She will go to the vet tomorrow. She still seems to be bleeding a bit but doesn’t clean herself up and her bum is messy. Hopefully the vet can shed some light on what’s happeningI would find a way to block off the sight of the other rabbit this could be making her stressed. If next time she doesn't pull fur you can cut some off or when you shave her next save some for does that don't pull any fur or not enough. 60's and raining could have been too cold without any fur. You might want to add a fleece blanket in the nestbox for added warmth. Again, this could be just a first-time mom thing too, if you can do all of this by day 28 of pregnancy then you should be setting her up for success. The stress of moving maybe could have affected it. Did the babies look different then they should have?
When I checked her yesterday it looked like she was starting a nest in her box. The hay was burrowed into and I kept checking for fur.. I thought everything was fine. They seemed to b cleaned up and I am guessing they had been born alive but no fur pulled. I had rabbits before that when I checked on them the mother then ignored them and let them die so I don’t like to stress out a new mom.If they looked normal, it’s hard to say if they were born alive and died from being cold or if they were born dead, though it’s unusual for all to be born dead in that case.
On day 28 of a pregnancy we will typically watch the first time doe closely for signs of nesting. You can’t always save a litter, but sometimes you can.
Cages with does on either side should not affect a rabbit who is kindling, at least it never did for ours. We did make sure there was no buck close by.
