Hello! I am very interested in rabbit color genetics and was wondering if anyone had any reading reccomendations? I'm looking for something pretty in-depth if possible. I have a biology degree and genetics was my favorite core class! (NERD ALERT!) I have 4 bunnies, 2 male Holland lops and 2 female Holland lop mixes and I would love to work out their genotypes before I start breeding. I've read through some posts here and some blogs as well but if anyone knows of some good books I'd appreciate the recs.

I'm also confused about one of my females coloration. She's very pale with a red cast to her blue eyes. She isn't white enough for a BEW or REW, but she doesn't seem to have any distinctive markings. She looks like she's been tea dyed... I'll attempt to include pics.

Any help with either of my queries would be appreciated!

I am not an expert on this by any means, but I have been watching YouTube videos by Holland Lop breeder “Hooks Hollands” and she has a video where she goes into great detail about what colours come from specific pairings. I tried to find the specific video, and it didn’t jump out at me, but here is her channel:

I never actually finished my biology degree because I dropped out of college when my mom died, but I came pretty close to it and also had a strong focus on genetics... I'd love to hear detailed explanations of rabbit color genetics as well, for no reason other than that I'm a nerd and I find it interesting, haha. I get excited over something as minor as having a reason to give someone a layman's explanation of how the dwarf gene works :p.

Her color looks like Sable Frosty. In hollands that usually showable as frosty. It's A_ B_ cchl_ D_ ee. The ARBA guidebook has a section about genetics. I haven't found any books that I really love about genetics though. Especially because it's different depending on every breed. The book I like most is coat color genetics of the netherland dwarf, or something like that, but the color names are a bit different than holland lops, as are the color crossing rules. Here's a little writeup I did about genetics, but it was for a class so I didn't get into too much detail and I definitely wrote to the rubric instead of trying to make it good ;) http://cactusrabbitry.rf.gd/coat_colors.pdf

That right there really makes me realize how much I've missed conversations with biology/genetics people, lol! For most people, I'm sure that's just a string of gibberish. I'll have to give your writeup a read when I have more time tomorrow - I can't wait to learn more about this stuff :D.

Thanks for all the help! Turns out Mochi is a boy which puts a damper on my breeding plans as I now only have one agouti female. I know her mom was broken chinchilla but her dad was also agouti. Hopefully some of those recessive genes come out to play. We're also looking to get another female.
