I have a 10 week old holland lop very fuzzy. He has red swollen eye lids. Had some eye boogers the other day and I cleaned them. His eye lids was a little ref then but not swolle. Today it's bad. His nose is wet all the time too. Another problem he's having is he's not eatting his crcotropes. I find the cage full when I wake up. I'm so worried about him. He has a vet appt Wednesday. Just trying to get advice from peoples that's had these problems. Here is a photo of his eye. Not the best one.

Until you can get him to the vet, you could make an eyewash for him. There are lots of recipes for homemade eyewashes for conjunctivitis on the internet. When I make an eyewash if usually boil 1 cup water, add 1/4 teaspoon salt (makes it more like saline solution) and 1-2 black tea bags (tea has tannins and they are antibacterial). Some people use chamomile or green tea.

It sounds like his is spreading faster than simple conjunctivitis so its good that you are taking him straight to the vet he probably needs drops and oral antibiotics.

Can you see his poor eyes in the photo? He's so sweet!!

I can't see his eyes all that well in the photo but still, I can see some redness. Poor boy.

Not eating his cecotropes might just be that he is eating too rich of a diet, like too many pellets which spoils his appetite for eating hay. So, you might want to cut back on his pellets and give more hay overnight and see his poos go back to normal. Also, eating too many greens can cause excess cecotropes too. Really the solution to excess cecotropes is usually hay.

He doesn't get any veggies or fruit yet. Only pellets and hay. They both are alfalfa .

I'm not sure if it's here. I live in the U.s. Kentucky

Ok, well it's not likely to be myxo, as it isn't a common disease here in the US.

You can try a plain sterile saline(no chemicals) for eyes to rinse the eyes out. It may help a little. See if you can get an appt. sooner. And if it worsens, the eye is bulging or cloudy looking, and/or your bun stops eating, you need to call up for an emergency appt. and get him in right away.

With the excess cecotropes, your bun may be on too rich of a diet with the alfalfa hay. Try switching to a grass hay. You'll need to keep an eye on him to make sure he is eating it, as some buns won't switch over to grass hay easily when they are used to alfalfa.

Where do I get the The solution from? I feed oxbow hay and pellets. I work all day tomorrow. He's running and he binkies like crazy. Eats and poops fine. I love my little boy an so don't want anything to happen to him.

He may just have an eye infection that the vet can prescribe some antibiotic drops to treat. My bunny Smokey had one last spring. I had a hard time getting the drops in his eyes and had to switch to a cream, but he recovered very well and hasn't had a problem since.

I hope that's all that's wrong with him. He's so active. He just jumped on the sofa with me and jumped down. Both my buns have been racing down the hallway.

Took Bon Bon to the vet. First time going to that vet. She is cheap but not that great. That's just my option. She said he's under weight and breathing fast. I think you are going to loose him. He was running around every where. Didn't look like he was going to die. She weighted him and he weights 2.6. Checked his lungs and she said she heard something . His eyes where stil red and a little swollen. She gave him a shot of antibiotics and sim baytril to take home. She didn't know about oxbow and said that I should feed him a mix of different brands. The ones with the fruit and colored pieces are the best. She also feeds hers crackers and mini wheats. She said I'm too picky. Im sorry I love my babies and I want the best for them. Is 2 pounds 6 oz ok for a 10 week old holland lop?

I don't think that vet is very knowledgeable about what to feed a rabbit. I would never feed my rabbit crackers and from the research I've done, keeping them on the same pellet is recommended because diet changes can upset their digestion. Also, the pellets with the treats mixed in are not the best quality and rabbits will usually pick out the sweet bits and leave the rest behind. The antibiotics should help with the eye infection though. If Bon Bon isn't better in a few days or takes a turn for the worse, I would try to find another vet. As for the weight, I'm not sure but it sounds okay. Holland lops only get to be about 4 lbs anyway.

I was thinking the same about the weight. I would never ever feed my buns anything else beside oxbow. Crackers and mini wheats, I wouldn't even think about that. I'm so picky when it comes to them. I'm using horse stall pellets as bedding. She said change to yesterday's news or paper bedding. I'm wondering if that's a problem.

I use the horse stall pellets too, but just in the litter box. Lots of people on the forum use them too and I don't think there is any problem with them. I used to use Carefresh which I liked but it is soooo much cheaper to use the horse stall pellets that I just had to switch.

Mine are only in the litter box. He lives on my carpet in a cage.

Does your vet see a lot of rabbits? It's hard for me to believe that a rabbit-experienced vet wouldn't have heard of Oxbow. They have a lot of resources for veterinarians and their critical care product is very popular with veterinarians.

It's possible that the litter is affecting him. The pine pellets are usually okay since they're kiln dried, but he may be sensitive to them. How often are you changing the litter? A build up of ammonia from his urine could also irritate his eyes. It might be worth it to try switching to a paper based pellet litter (something like yesterday's news) or even just using newspaper that is changed frequently and see if that helps.

My buns often have excess cecotropes when I change pellets. I've found a brand I like now, so that doesn't happen anymore, but it's something to look into. Not sure if that's the usual reaction for a diet change, though.

Your bun isn't going to die from fast breathing and underweight. If his lungs are noisy, it could be something more serious. However, I'm not sure I would trust that vet with the diagnosis. After all, she feeds her buns CRACKERS! If you can, try to listen to the lungs yourself.

It is likely an allergy from hay, litter, or something else in the environment. It could be myxo, but it's probably not.

By the way, it's good to be "too picky" with rabbits.

He sounds like a pretty normal weight for a young bun. Her buns are probably just overweight, and that's what she thinks is normal.

Also, pellets are better for rabbits than the fruity colorful stuff, according to most reputable rabbit sites.
